Tomato Growing Thread 2023

Busy truss outdoors on Der Kleine Doctor.

 

I'd neglected these because the early fruits didn't taste very good. What a difference a week of sunshine makes! Only half the claimed weight but that's the least of my concerns.

 

You may remember that THE BLIGHT hit me a week or two ago. Unfortunately the green ones we picked are also showing signs of the disease. The smaller ones first!
However Crimson Crush still fine as well as Red Cherry (free seeds from Gardener's World) The latter are reddening nicely but Crush much slower.



So our harvest of the day have few tomatoes!!

 

Continuing harvests. "Banan krasnyi" red banana, is my most productive individual plant. 13 trusses on two stems of between 3 and 8 of those torpedo shaped ones. Peppers are ring of fire, jalapeno m, aji mochero, curry f1 which I picked green.

I didn't take a picture but today I picked the very first tomato from my self-sown 'Gardeners Delight' on the balcony! It had a heavenly taste! The other plants will take a few more weeks before ripening.

I can't be 100% sure but I think it is 'Gardeners Delight' for the size of the fruits but on the other hand it seemed a little sweeter than normal for this tomato. Perhaps when I get fruits from the other plants I will be better able to judge whether of not this plant is what it appears to be. The foliage seems a little darker than the rest of the 9 plants I have but in a photo the difference doesn't stand out. At the same time there is one other plant that is different from the rest. This one has much lighter foliage than any other of the plants. It's also slower growing & is only a little more than half the height of the others! It's right next door to the self-sown one as well"

But no, I'm a greenhouse variety and am growing upwards! Tomato Sweet Olive replied.

I picked more today, then I removed lower leaves and the ones showing aging or disease signs. We are at the stage of being "full of tomatoes" now. Loads in the kitchen.

Isn't this tomato thread brilliant I love seeing everyone achievements

You may remember I posted that the Blight had got me and that the infected plants had been lifted and disposed of in a non biological way. Luckily some Blight Resistant varieties were still beautifully green.
We went away for a few days and returned to find tomatoes adjacent to the blighted ones infected. Curiously the leaves etc were fine but the fruits badly blighted as per photograph!! Is it possible that the actual fruits became infected by proximity whilst the plants did not??
The unfortunate part is that the fruits are CRIMSON CRUSH!!!
At the moment plants further away SEEM not to be infected? Obviously the plant with infected fruit is being disposed of!!
