Tomato Growing Thread 2023

Ive had blight on blight resistant types but I just cut off the affected parts. I find that usually, they grow out of it. This year I have had to dump two or three resistant plants that were badly affected (burlesque). They were growing amongst other blight resistants which remained lightly affected and the fruit was unaffected. Ive also just pulled up some outdoor sungold which succumbed to blight and noticed a big side shoot which has survived and is absolutely banging out more sungolds! Some tomatoes seem to get almost overnight and its obvious that they need to go whereas others can shrug off the blight so long as you quickly remove the affected parts

 

Thanks susishoe! Must be said i always take the slightest infection as being BLIGHT!!!
I immediately uproot the whole plant and get rid of it!! My main reason is that, as a fungal disease, it is invisible to begin with. The spores are already infecting other tomatoes and the more time is allowed before action then in my opinion the more infection will take place!! I may well be reacting too quickly? I suppose it was the first time I had blight and ignored it, and it infected EVERYTHING, leaves, stems and of course fruit.
This particular infection was caught early. We picked all the fruit (all green) Any infection from foliage was controlled. We go through the fruit daily and a few have been infected and destroyed, but also many have been perfect!!
The greenhouse is alongside with three plants, one of each variety being grown. We have been very vigilant and been careful about watering and, so far, there's been no blight!! Re the last photo!!!

 

Yes I can well understand that!! At first I was nervous about seeing blight on BR types, especially after having years of blight ruining all my crops. But after doing a bit of research and reading how others managed their BR crops I decided to bit the bullet and see what happened. My view was ‘well I’m going to lose them anyway”. So, yeah, now I just do a watch and wait and chop off anything that looks suss. And it works in the main. Ive decided I wont bother with Burlesque outdoors again but most of the other BR tomatoes are usually fine with a bit of blight and will shrug it off once affected parts are removed BTW - my BR crops are Oh Happy Day, Rose Crush, Crimson Crush, Crimson Cherry (bit of a beast - a few spots of blight on leaves but absolutely laden with BIG cherry toms) and Pink Honeymoon (gorgeous - my favourite!)

 

At last..a Sungold harvest is happening..

Last big harvest for me, just various cherries and cherry sized bigger varieties left.

 

I pulled out a half of my plants today. Picked 2 bowls of tomatoes. Yes, me too, have just a bit left. Few large ones ripening and cherries here and there. In general very good year. Having 5 of 5 large tomatoes every day for 2 months.

 

My stray tomato. I left one of the seedlings that emerged in the greenhouse. I know what it is, one year I was growing a couple of plants from shop bought vine tomatoes. It's him, an exact copy. We already ate the lower truss.

I ate the 3 'Gardeners Delight' tomatoes this morning that were ripe on a plant that I sowed, not the self-sown one. They were more or less like the ones I used to grow as far as I can remember.

Some say this variety has lost a lot of its original flavour but that didn't seem so to me. In a couple of days I will have fruit ripened enough to eat on the self-sown plant & another of the ones I sowed. Then I will be able to compare the flavour as the self-sown plant's fruit seemed to me to be a little sweeter than I remembered it from some years ago.

 

I saw a few blighted leaves on my Crimson crush yesterday,
I've cut them off.

Sorry I haven't answered your posts earlier.

@pete , No, the council hasn't done any spraying near here - but then again why would that affect just 1 plant & not the other 8? Nobody else has plants near our balcony either & the only gardens nearby are on the other side of a wide road with wide grass verges.

@JWK The growbags are from a reputable company this year not like last year. Once again, why only 1 plant & not the rest? If it were the growbag, why aren't the other 2 plants affected?
