Tomato Growing Thread 2023

LOL - I've been clinging onto my one plant of Super Marmande which has now only one tomato ripening - the rest are small green fifty pence size with scatterings of flowers all over. I was hoping we were going to have more hot weather as the plant has never looked as good...showing me that if we hadn't had such a poor start with the weather this year that I would have had an abundance of fruit.
Never mind, I've learnt such a lot, even from ending up with beefsteak instead of growing cherry tomatoes.
I'll be a bit more prepared next year with larger pots / 8 x 2 x 4.5ft (L-W-H) cold frame along with the newfound knowledge that I have received from this forum. "thank you"
I'm also spreading my wings a little in adding a cucumber -WOW! "thats me getting exited, if only my legs would work that well"

 

My holiday home is so different to home re gardening. Masses of decking/balconies for pots and I can't remember long spells of frost in the area as a lad, so I'm sure there would be plenty of space! However even if I did win the lottery the owners would not part with their paradise!!
Sioned and Lara went swimming this morning! Will have to buy a swimming costume. Even if walking is difficult, the sea's support will enable me to swim???

 

I am new to this forum.

I am an enthusiastic grower of open-pollinated tomatoes and am all about taste and productivity. I love to grow a wide variety of tomatoes from salad sizes to the monstrous (in both size and looks), provided they taste good.

It’s the first time I have done this so I only have a few seeds to swap but they might be of interest to someone. If this is successful, I’ll save many more seeds of more varieties in the future.

Hi, @Fred Clarke. I’m away on my holibobs at the moment but when I get back I’ll be doing the last of my seed saving. I know I’ll have a few Santiam Sunrise available. I’ll be posting a list in due course, of the varieties I have available. I’m trying to avoid adding to my seed collection so rather than swaps I ask for folks to send me a stamp or to send £1 by PayPal to cover p&p. K

Good evening
I last posted in June after planting my first tomato plants in 3 separate large pots in a greenhouse that was left at our daughtersnew house.
The plants have currently produced plenty of fruit but as of yet only the smallest have turned red.
Is this because I planted late this year?
Can I expect the rest to ripen or do I have to do 'something' to assist in this.
I am a first time grower so am really not sure what to expect

Tomatoes will ripen indoors with a Banana to help.

 

I think you probably have another month in which some might yet ripen in the greenhouse, depends a bit on the weather and temperatures.

 

Just spent an hour clearing spent plants some from the greenhouse which seem to have given up the ghost and most from one of my outdoor beds. Got loads of tomatoes that have been slugged and snailed (little buggers). Going to cut off the worst of the damage and then make a huge pan of roast tomato soup. Still got another greenhouse but that one seems to still be banging out fruit so will leave them for now. Oh and I’ve also got loads of tomatoes that are fine. Dunno what Ill do with them yet…guess they’ll hang around on the worktop for a few days til I get my act together and maybe distribute some round the neighbours!

 

Welcome from another (relatively) newbie. What toms did you find most tasty or disease resistant?
A little story: When I worked in a school I brought on hanging basket toms to sell to finance our gardening club. I usually did 2 varieties of red ones and 2 varieties of yellow ones. I always asked for feedback regarding taste and invariably got the reply 'They were all lovely'! Oh well at least everyone was happy.
