I used to have the bog standard I. delaveyi many years ago, but I thought the flowering season was a bit short and it kind of disappeared.

 

The white one looked promising but the seed I had for it never germinated

 

I find I delayvi lasts quite well, it is in a less freely draining (flatter) bed and a bit brighter than where the late I mairei was.

Leuchtenbergia principis, a parsnip rooted cactus, so requires a deep pot. Well over 40 years old, flowers most years, this year a bit later than usual. As with all my cacti greenhouse in summer and windowsill over winter.
Getting plenty big enough for it's present pot.

Kind of houseplant, pineapple is coming along.

 

Fishbone is flowering again (or still). This plant just keeps giving and giving, 5 flowers so far and at least three buds.

I'm leaving the spent flowers just to see what happens- sometimes cactus seedpods look good.

 

Bougainvillea and an early white Christmas cactus which was only brought in to the conservatory three weeks ago.

 

I did this several times when we lived in Spain. The secret to getting the flowers to appear is to give them at least 12 hours a day of absolute, total darkness - & not forgetting a single day! (Or you will have to start over again!) I had one plant for several years & I managed to get it to flower each year! I timed it from when our kids started school in September each year. It would start to flower before Christmas! But at that time as we didn't have Internet, like we do today, (How did we ever live without it???), so I didn't know you are supposed to cut it back to encourage it to become bushy & lower & have lots more flowers!

Although I've had several plants since returning from Spain, (22 years ago), none of them have survived my heavy handiness with the watering can! :(

 

This Christmas cactus - or more properly, Thanksgiving Cactus, has spent all summer outside on the balcony. It was repotted into succulent compost in May this year, with my granddaughter's help. A week or so ago when I was watering it I noticed that some buds were forming. I brought it into the kitchen a couple of days ago & now a couple of flowers have opened.

I took cuttings of mine last month and they rooted. Not sure when mine bloom but at some odd time. They live out permanently here.
