Are these ads genuine?

I've been getting a few gardening related adverts through lately on my phone, probably due to my browsing history.

One such advert for example will show a very poorly looking plant, and what to do to remedy the situation. Then there will be a picture of a healthy vibrant looking plant after the "treatment" has been applied. You know the ones I mean.

However, some of these miraculous "cures" are very odd to say the least. They usually entail mixing the said "cure" with water. Some such substances they recommend are sugar and water, turmeric and water, and the strangest one of the lot....coca cola and water!!!

Are these ads just plain crackers or are they genuine remedies used to fix common houseplant ailments?

Coca cola contains phosphoric acid, as did rust removers when I was growing up.

What actually are they trying to sell you?
Turmeric is supposed to be a general panacea recommended for everything from cancer to arthritis so why not greenfly. The sugar is supposed to act as a nutrient for the soil microbiome.
I have seen diluted molasses recommended for outdoor use and also cornflower. Do they work on houseplants no idea.

 

I tried coca cola once in the toilet to clean it, left it overnight, couldn't get rid of the brown stain next day.
I prefer to use actual toilet cleaner myself.

 

coca cola actually reduces the alkalinity, which is great for acidic loving plants.
Turmeric and cinnamon powders help to reduce risk of rot and fungus.
Sugar in the water of cut flowers, yes. In the soil, not heard this one and could have a detrimental effect

 

I use white vinegar and baking powder, as I can't stand the smell of bleach

 

I only use bleach for stains, I squirt cillit bang in there for limescale .

 

My Dad always said 'If in doubt, don't ...' so I would forget the ads. I would block them if I were you. I've done it on my computer.
I never use my mobile phone, don't know where it is. They're more trouble than they're worth.

Has anyone tried cut up Banana skins in water as a feed?

 

A cheap potassium feed....a smelly one though on indoor plants!

 

I don't eat bananas so, no, I ain't.
I suppose it would stop people slipping over on them.
