Which Fleece to use ......

Hi All

As we are rapidly going into winter as October here in the UK has fooled us to think otherwise its time to start fleecing plants in the garden .... but which fleece to use or other similar product ... my use is for tree ferns, bananas, gingers and my new perennial salvias (Taken cuttings of the salvias just in case now in the greenhouse)...

So Product name etc ... I am confident we may all find useful

I just use Horticultural fleece ,sorry @Spruce I don't know of any other...I've even resorted to news paper over plants to keep them cozy.I don't bubble wrap my GH these days or if I do I just make bubblewrap tents for anything tender,but I don't seem to over winter things these days,you live and learn

 

Poundshop sells fleece occasionally.......I forget how much it costs!

 

I usually use just the stuff you get from garden centres, its fairly light and I dont think its much frost protection for winter, more a quick cover up for spring frosts.
Not a fan of fleece in general, I find if its actually touching the leaves its probably no protection at all.

 

I also found the stuff I got from Wilco (rip) started disintegrating very quickly. Maybe it was because I was using it as insect barrier in summer ie high light levels. I know it's ugly, but have you thought about expanded polystyrene?

 

I only use it to get veg off to a good start in spring and early summer. I get the 30gsm stuff now as the thin 17gsm stuff tears really easily in the wind. Not sure of the brands I've bought, just make sure it's UV treated

I saw something today on facebook and they had protected bananas and tree fern stems with second hand coffee sacks just tied around them, how you get hold of those I dont know but obviously just thick hessian sacks.
