I used to like wearing a balaclava. I think I've still got one my mother knitted for me many years ago. I'll have to find it to wear in the garden during winter

          A bit of useless info.
Where I live has always had a cannon parked in the middle of the high street, it was captured at the battle of Balaclava.
Not a lot of people know that.

In Swansea there's a Balaclava Street, Inkerman Street and Sebastopol Street, all to comemorate the Battle. They are all near the docks.

New book - only 50 pages in - some cracking proof reader fails in this one.

Here is an extract from one of the chapters:

"Nancy looked again. She knew that he was a couple of years older than Jonathan as his sister Maria, the one getting engaged, was the same age as her and Pen."

I'm not sure what this means.

The story revolves around an engagement party - at which the murder takes place. The name of the to be groom on the invitation to the engagement party is different to the name of the bloke who is introduced to the guests - at the party - as the groom.

I'm not sure who the groom is? Or is this going to be one of these open marriage things?

Sometimes it is difficult to tell who is talking in the book.

In some cases you can tell where the author has taken a break and started again - there are areas where the story line is disjointed.

The story itself has grabbed my attention - so I'm going to stick with it to find out who dunnit.

The author has already published several books - so really there is no excuse.

I had to laugh - the proof reader is acknowledged by name at the end of the book.

Balaclava's are still worn by many motorcyclists under their helmets.

@clanless I've read many books like that. I now find I'm correcting the grammar etc. as I read through it. :)

I read a lot of books, up to six a week, but the few that have obscure writing or bad grammar become unread. I don't mind bad grammar or pronunciation in general conversation or friendly writing but not in professional writing.

A good proof reader/editor should catch those problems before publishing. I quite often received a "can you word it better?" comment. :rolleyespink:

I keep a book list so I don't buy or read the same one twice. Also make comments for myself not to read certain authors in future. It's mostly sloppy research I hate in non fiction, some authors publish books just by copying others works and slightly changing it.

I struggle with American authors using slang like 'gotten' in factual books as it comes across as childish.

I don't keep a list but almost all the fiction books I read (something over 15,000) are borrowed from the library. I find that if I can't remember the title of a book I have read I am still able to recognise the picture on the cover of the book. I'm surprised they can still find, or produce, so many different pictures.

I find it difficult to accept that some slang or modern use has replaced what I feel is 'Proper English' in books.

Also, it annoys me with news readers that they try to dramatise their reports with inaccurate English. Sometimes two words are almost interchangeable but can give different emotional effects. Two words that come under that category are 'died' and 'killed'. For example:- the news report says a person was killed in the flood whereas it should have been died in the flood. It has the same very sad end result but the wrong use of the word killed is almost certainly used for dramatic effect.

And don't get me started on the misuse of 'less than' and 'fewer than'!

                      Signed:- Pedantic Old Man :old:

I can't flaming well do anything at all easily. Even making porridge or lighting the woodstove is a difficult, and many things like the stairs, khazi, etc, are fraught with danger. Bother it! Neither can I drink anything interesting because medicines. Drat, drat and double drat.

20 mph speed limit will be enforced from December - so if you pop over the border...

                                Check this out:

The prospect of road tolls in Wales moved closer this week when new legislation passed the latest stage of its evaluation by the Senedd (Welsh Parliament). If approved, higher polluting vehicles may face tolls on some of Wales’ busiest roads.

20 mph and ULEZ - Mark is going out with a bang...
