WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2023

Cleared two of our big borders of most of the Cosmo and Zinnias and Rudbeckias, a few are still blooming away quite happily.
Hardy Fuchsias are also still going strong too as are the tender ones ,I have moved these to a slightly more sheltered spot.
Dug a lot more tender Geraniums up and after tidying them up potted up for Winter storage. Moved a few self seeded Primroses to more suitable places.
Swept all 3 patios ,the leaves are now beginning to fall and swept the path that circles the garden.

Weather has been perfect for doing gardening tasks, albeit a tad soggy underfoot after all the recent heavy rain we've had.

 

I've not done much on the balcony today as I'm still waiting for the end of the month to come around so I can remove the tomato plants from their growbags & put up the table & MG. The tomatoes looked to be wilting a bit today so I gave them just a little water. There are still lots of toms to pick but they are all green. As soon as I notice one starting to turn a little yellowish I pick it & take it into the kitchen for a few days before eating it!

I was looking at the 3 troughs on the balcony railings wondering if I could empty them before next week but I was cold from the foggy morning & didn't do anything. I have small bulbs to put in them but they will have to wait at least another week.

I did however take 3 cutting from the Fuchsia 'Garden News' & another 3 or 4 from 'Beacon'. I've put them in a small jar of water in the kitchen & once I see roots I will pot them up. I've taken them as "insurance"

I've spent days clearing areas of the rear garden in order to create new flower borders but I wonder if I'd be better off planting rice?



It pours with rain for a day then with luck doesn't rain for a day but the day it doesn't rain means everything is still soaking wet; working in the garden I can wear my wellies not worried about leaving a mud trail but I'm highly frustrated because I want to work from our pathway and everything constantly wet is stopping me unless I want to create a huge mess. I want to get so much done before winter arrives.

I've spent this morning setting up two new BT digital phones on our landline; more frustration; a five year old understands these modern electronics than I do; good job the booklet is only 69 pages or I would have really struggled. We can now send and receive calls.

As it was raining on & off during the morning (& as the 31st hasn't arrived yet) I didn't do anything more than take photos of the few plants in flower still with beads of rain on them! Would you like to see them?

 

Started to clear out the cr....I mean rubbish I'd accumulated in the greenhouse, ready to put more cr....I mean rubbish in there over the winter

 

You need to do as I have, get another greenhouse....

 

Dodging showers, cleared out the greenhouse gutters,moved the last of the potted dahlias to the greenhouse, I've not had a good year with dahlias.
Took some cuttings of various things.

 

I'm in the process of reassembling my tempory winter cover over the strelitzia and protea, and any other pots I can fit in.
The Strelitzia has flowering stems coming up already, but they wont flower until early July.
Just had a heavy shower so everything is soaked again now.

 

Managed to get to the tip with some garden and household waste. It started to rain on the way back.

 

Me and my five year old granddaughter put a big trough by her mum's front door and planted tulips then narcissi, Muscari and finally Anemone blanda. This is the first time I have tried lasagna planting so I hope it works.

 

And fill that one up as well

Will I ever get on top of ivy clearing; another 6 bin bags ready for the tip having been working in our soaking wet garden;


The pictures don't show the hard messy work involved.

I've just been washing the pathway using brush & watering can.

This morning I dug out lots more ivy; hollies; laurels and English geraniums adding to the mess on the pathway but it's now looking a great deal better.

New areas created for planting but it's been hard won. Spade; loppers and secateurs all slippery with wet soil what fun it's been but once I started I'd no intention of quitting; possibly one big last push should finish clearing the ivy; I'll be glad to see the back of it.
