WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2023

Finished planting all of the bulbs.
This border i put the tulips in, there's 2 rows instead of 1, in groups of 5 and then the polyanthus.

This one i cut back the old leaves of the hellebores to plant the hyacinth bulbs and the polyanthus, put a lot of compost in from out of the compost bins, the soil is a lot better for it. The rhubarb is growing again.

 

I like to know the Latin names of plants but I also use the common names. Some of the more difficult to remember I put, along with their common name, on the photos I take of them & even on the folders that I keep them in! You may have noticed that on some of the photos I've uploaded.

Nothing doing on balcony today - I probably won't do anything before Monday at the earliest.

I'm planning the transformation of the small piece of land at our second home, which we recently purchased. It's a much smaller house with a significantly smaller garden (see the picture below), but one that I consider suitable for retirement.

I'd like a portion of it to be a relaxation space, for which I'll be creating a stone pathway and perimeter to install a small fire pit, along with a few rattan recliners like these. I also plan to plant some small-sized trees or bushes around.

Has anyone else designed a space this small? Would you like to share pictures?

 

I've been out and about in the garden this afternoon . Just emptying pots of bedding plants and potting a few of the fuchsia up see if they over winter in the GH . Dug out all the tender salvias and potted them up . Moved a few things around in the GH so I could bring in some pots with plants in to overwinter , One was the Agapanthus Black jack which is throwing up another flower bud , I thought it were just a sales pitch about it repeat flowering happily been proved wrong.

Thrown away more dahlias due to crown gall , very suspiciously its the exact same variety Waltzing Matilda I had to throw away last year due to the same problem ( new tubers this year ). Its not my soil I had two other dahlias ( fascination )in the same barrel which didn't have any sign of crown gall but they had to go as well cause they were in the same pot . I really like Waltzing Matilda nice colour but two lots in a row has me think they may be a problem in the fields where its grown , I'll be avoiding it in the near future .

 

It shouldn't be to difficult with what you have in mind, I'd have a prod around in the ground and have a look at what's underneath , also I would do some testing hole to see how well it drain, fill the hole up with water and wait to see how long the water drains away. Do you know where the sun hits the garden south facing etc ? where it gets the most light maybe is where you want the seating to be.

It would be better if you made a new thread you'll get more input that way by other members .

 

Another day without putting a foot outside the balcony door!

 

Nipped out to do the weekly leaf harvest from the pond and to hang the new solar lamps in the Viburnum.

Fixing the new solar panel alongside the existing ones on the (neighbours) rotting fence I had a grand idea

Instead of trying to wriggle the panels in place one by one with bits of wire here and there, I screwed in two hoops , threaded a piece of a stick through and simply slotted the panels in.



Now all I need is some solar power, please... the yellow big thingy in the sky you know... please?

 

Tried to weed in-between the slabs on the patio but it keeps raining.

You've put a lot of work in @Logan creating the borders they look excellent and will be even better in full bloom next springtime; well done.


Just a typical day here in Yorkshire so everything's normal; J Parker's advice is to well water the plants when they arrive?

No gardening today but this morning I've spent time in the workshop working on the rotavator restoration; I thought I was about ready to start reassembling but was rather put back to find I could spin the engine over by hand with no resistance at all; zero compression is just another problem to resolve. I found the exhaust valve to not have any clearance at all when it should have 0.008"; It looks to have been running for years like this because both the seat and valve are burnt; I've already spent over an hour valve grinding with more yet still do do; I'm enjoying a mug of tea and lump of cake then I'll resume work on the valves.


Not good the seat should have a nice shiny ring unlike this.

It's a very slow job grinding a bad valve seat by hand but I'm winning.

I'll stick with it because I want to put this rotavator to good use once it's restored; more spade digging doesn't appeal to me as fun.

Harvested all my beetroot and kohl rabi, covered an overgrown path with cardboard and woodchips, edged a couple of beds, spread about six barrows of homemade compost, moved my climbing bean support, weeded a few beds, caught another mouse.

 

Rain. Again. Moved a few autumn plants to better positions; that's it.

 

Thank you @Retired I'm sure that you'll get the rotavator working soon. Yes make sure that your plants are watered, even though it's raining the rain won't get to the pots well because of the foliage, if they have any this time of the year.

 

Potted up some new strawberry plants, until I have somewhere prepared for them. Sowed some chitted lupin seed and then extracted some dahlia tubers that had dried off and put them into winter storage. Also watered, as necessary, in the greenhouse.
