Squirrels building their winter stash I guess. Squirrels are awfully clever so Mr Fenn's discouragement might not be enough to keep them out.

Is the tunnel related to the acorn situation? Or could it be rabbits?

Another option is that your mind has reached the limit of the cast limitations and you are just noticing things in a different way as they say

Probably squirrels but I think Jays like them as well, occasionally see them around here.
Doubt many would still be on the tree by now.

Yes, Jays, Nuthatches, Woodpeckers and Magpies and some other members of the crow family eat acorns.

Mice, rats, squirrels, badgers and deer eat acorns. Oh, and pigs too but I don't think you'll find many of those in your garden Drahcir.

I love your thread title. Has me humming...

I agree that squirrels are darned sneaky and likely are the bandits.

You may find a seedling or two next year; I often find them around the veg area and put it down to them having been buried by a squirrel or a jay.

I've noticed a few hazel seedlings this last year, its probably the squirrels that have moved in for the last two years.
Hazel is non existent around the houses here so they must be bringing the nuts in from a fair distance.

What's wrong with Magpies? We see them every day here & sometimes I've been within a metre or less of 1 or 2. They don't see me behind the plants on the balcony but sometimes they land on the railings that enclose our part of the flats from the street. I've even spoken to them on occasions but they ignore me completely! :rolleyespink:

They are our wildlife, the thing with wildlife is you cant just pick and choose which is often how people see it.

Environmentalist's are often the worst at dismissing one species in order to help another.

What makes for a bigger problem is that not only do our fellow humans leave/drop wasted food everywhere, the magpie has already adapted to warmer winters/autumns and breed an extra clutch of eggs each year, thereby increasing the population by a third extra. No small bird nest is safe from their predations, taking both eggs and hatchlings.

A minority view, but I think there is one particular species on the planet that probably fits that description better.

                          Magpies are nothing in comparison.:roflol:
