What have you given up trying to grow?

Tried growing chinese cabbage this year but despite my efforts the snails have got them. Lettuce I can grow in containers as they don't have much chance in the ground but the chinese cabbage are mollusc magnets. Other things that have succumbed are blue meconopsis poppies which germinated well and I bring them on to a good size but they disappear overnight. The other thing I've tried is Ceanothus which does really well - I even had one about 8' high but they don't like wet winters I think, or pruning.

 

Fuchsias - one of my favourite plants. But we have gall mites around here. No chance, every summer was the same, buy a plantlet, it starts flowering nicely, and here they are and ruin the plant.

 

I finally gave up on growing an Embothrium after 3 attempts some years ago, but I mostly give up on things that I get bored with.
Veg wise I'm not into growing brassicas anymore as I've found clubroot to be a problem.

Just a note on Ceanothus @Baalmaiden, you can prune it, but not back into hard wood, and never found wet winters a problem, but freezing easterly winds are.

 

What have you given up trying to grow?
Taller.
Plant wise? I'll keep trying until I succeed with it

 

Hebes.

December 2022 killed all 20 of mine.

Second time of losing them, so no more.

 

Roses. I'm digging them out one by one, apart from the Natasha Richardson which somehow always manages to be beautiful and healthy. The rest are too thorny, always get blackspot and devoured by aphids. I'm done.

 

@Alisa I've had a similar problems with fuchsia gall mite, however I have found that Thalia is little affected and that it doesn't seem to bother species fuchsias for example F microphylla, F paniculata (late autumn flowering not guaranteed hardy) and F hatschbachii.

 

Brussels sprouts. No matter how many "early" varieties I have tried, they are never big enough to harvest! And it how makes me understand why the grocer charges so much

And this year, cleome might join the "never to try again" list. I've tried different types that they sell at the garden centre and a generous member here, @CarolineL was very kind in sending me some of her no fail seeds and still I couldn't grow them. And Caroline's seeds have been verified as good ones by @Upsydaisy so it must just be a personality conflict or something between we and they!

 

Cannabis. It's a magnet for the local constabulary!!

 

Lilies (the lily beetles find them always. It's very hard to resist when bulbs are sold 70% off- the flowers are spectacular and so easy... but the pesky beetles ruin them. )

Kids

Cucamelons (three years trying rewarded me with one tasteless fruit and sparrow chicks with loads of entertainment eating the buds)

Petunias (for a while at least, there are so much more exiting plants for containers. I used to be a Petuniafile probably because of a nearby balcony from my childhood that was filled with single colour of Petunia- what a sight! )

Morinda from seed (the latest batch turned out to be mislabelled, all ten are Passifloras)

Mango from seed- so tempting but the result is a two year unsightly visitor to encourage aphids into my living room

Rocket- its a mad race between bolting and pests. Bolting usually wins.

Hardy annuals sown where they are to flower. Slugs. (need I say more? I'll say anyways.) Washing up bowl on a table and transplanting in clumps when sturdy enough is the way for me.

Pineapple from the crown. Results in a lovely mini pond of stagnant, mouldy swamp in my kitchen. @pete , please do not share any photos of yours

Leeks -Pigeons- Tesco Club Card Price. (That's a logical trail rather than a list of other things I don't grow. Well, Pigeons actually are on the list after the experience with our building site rescue nestlings Idiot and Imbecile that became very domesticated and used to love taking the bus on my shoulder. Long story, but take my word- don't go there. )

Oh to be in Canada! It has definitely earned it's "weed" nickname. It does grow like that here in our short growing season.

 

I found that the stuff I use on RSM seems to work on Fuchsia gall mite, but then I only really grow Thalia and a couple or hardy ones in the ground year round and cut back each winter.

 

I had a some plants like that a few years ago.

 

It may sound crazy but it's Spring Onions & Radish. They just won't mature.
