What have you given up trying to grow?

IMO brussel sprouts are a winter crop.
Now I understand your winters are harder than ours but they need a few frosts on them before they start to form nice buds and maybe your change from summer to winter is often too fast for them to form as they do in milder climates, but I bet you could have had some good ones this year with the milder weather up till now.

Lori as I said last year I have Cleome seeds I can send you.... just let me know if you're up for a final attempt.

I have a feeling that I might not be so lucky this year....it was too good to be true after so many years of failing. I think all my friends and family will be avoiding me this year as everyone who dare to visit went home armed with numerous Cleome plants.

 

That's the problem @pete , they started forming up to marble size by Christmas. Not big enough to harvest and and then we went to bitter cold and that killed them.

 

When did you sow the seed?

 

Celery and celeriac. They both need attention to watering that I don’t have time for. Nearly gave up on strawberries when the moorhens discovered the strawberry bed and used it as an all-day, eat-as-much-as-you can-without-exploding buffet. Then took the obvious solution of moving the bed to the other end of the plot They haven’t found it...yet. Transferred their attentions to all the other soft fruit.

 

Same with chinese cabbage. I'm trying one or two melons again this year but I'm expecting failure. Carrots always suffer badly from carrot root fly for me to bother, and that's me covering them from sowing to harvest.

 

I don't remember exactly when I started them but by the time I planted out in mid may, they were good sized seedlings.

Oh yes, @Hanglow I haven't had great success with carrots either. They never seem to get bigger than the end of my baby finger!

 

Yes, I have some this year for the first time, too! As I guess , you may be upwind of me, do you want them back?

Tell to grow their own like everybody else.

 

No, they wait until its just about ready them move in and take it all away as evidence.

 

I don't grow Brussel sprouts anymore because of the cabbage white butterflies, even when i covered the plants they would still get in.
Any type of other brassica because of the slugs and snails.
Beetroot it never grows well even with good watering.
These days i just grow tomatoes, i do well with them.
Cape gooseberry haven't got a long season to fruit well.

 

Ah, Pete, Kent just doesn't have the amount of rain we do! I think some of it is we get it mild for a long time and stuff shoots then it gets hit by a frost. The Beast from the East killed a peach I had like that

 

Nah tried pellets. The nematodes work if you have a mild wet period after you put it on (but it takes a while to work and snails don't seem to be affected as much. Last season I had hundreds of little flat snails after the wet late summer. Still finding them in the grenhouse.

 

The beast from the east killed a Ceonothus I had had for years which was my thinking about cold easterly winds.
