I'll be growing Winston first earlies if I can find seed. Then Sarpo mira maincrop, I'll probably use my own seed as am still digging them up.

                Hi,
My mate is going to plant Sarpo Mira in a polytunnel.
When will be a good time to plant them ?

He also wants to plant Centurion Onion sets in polytunnel too, but is not sure when to plant them.

                any advice much appreciated.

edit, my mate is new to gardening....

Depends on the last frost date in his area. I will plant my maincrop in a months time which means there will be a few frosty nights so if the tops have sprouted above ground I either earth up or fleece over. A polytunnel will provide some frost protection.

I would plant onion sets in March too.

I would not risk keeping bad potatoes either for compost or rotovating in, they might be diseased, did they have blight. Best to dispose as you don't want them to infect this seasons crop.

Earlies and maincrop are well chitted

I've put them all into seed trays with damp compost prior to planting soon. I'm going for an earlier maincrop planting this year.

I'm chitting some Maris pipers (don't know if these are mains, earlies or whatever). I wasn't doing spuds this year but the Mrs insists and I have some from the Christmas sack...

I've got Swift, Home Guard, and King Edward, just a few of each. I don't need many. I'll be putting them to chitt over the week end and I'll be growing them in tubs.

I normally just sow outside end of march for new potatoes, how much earlier could be tried in a pot in the greenhouse? Will probably only get a meal or two out of them but I do have excess seed potatoes

Would like to grow PFA but being a main crop it has succumbed to blight here in the past. I now grow large quantities of Anya being a 2nd early and never had a blight issue with them maturing before the real danger of blight. They also keep pretty well. Just finished the last of them 3 days ago. Ok they have somewhat lost the lovely new tatty taste but still fine. I grow Sarpo Mira as a main crop along with Setanta. The Setanta grow enormous. Both are blight resistant and again not had a bother with them even last season when it never seemed to stop raining after June:rolleyespink:.
