So sorry of the injustices you have witnessed and experienced with your brother @Upsydaisy . Expectations of excellent care should be expected. Reporting is also hard on the family, who will think they will be targeted as the "picky" family, or other words. But you have to report, you have to. if one individual is receiving less than acceptable care that means others are also.
Few years ago I went back to a nursing home that I had worked at in 1987, we had then an awesome director of nurses. Over the years she retired, home was sold. So upon my return my probably 10 years later my nose was hit with the stink of urine as I walked through the door, would have not been then. Got to the unit to check on my client in rehab. And then noticed an elderly gentleman who was trying to get up and walk somewhere, the nurse started to get him back in the chair, I noted his whole back side wet from urine. Immediately I corrected that nurse, telling him not to do that, and that the client was soaked with urine. Frankly, I do not care what the nurse thought of me saying anything to him, would do it again. And I will report him if he did, not to just his supervisor but the state, all that is negligence. And if I were to witness other such wrong, trust me.
On another story---when we had to send out, from the nursing home people to the local hospitals, I would cringe, just hoping I'd get them back without skin breakdown. Seems hospital have no clue how to turn people.

 

And another Saturday, 51 degrees, soggy outside. Have a short list of tasks to do outside, prune stuff, pick up some sticks etc. How exciting.
Move the fridge out and clean behind it. And then bathrooms. Such an exciting life I have. But love being home anyway, last year's travels just too much. Take care all.

 

That sounds terrible redstar. That does put me off the inevitable final move into a care home if I'm honest. Occasionally something similar hits the headlines over here, thankfully not that often, but nevertheless each incident is incredibly awful.

Nothing that awful happened and the staff are all lovely ,kind and treat him with great respect and sensitivity.

We have cleaners in twice a week to do his laundry, strip the bed and give his apartment a thorough clean through.

My Uncle also had Alzheimer's and ended his days in a care home. He was my Mum's brother I use to go with her and my brother ( little did we know then that he too would suffer from it too) to visit him. Thankfully his care home was very nice.

I thought I had posted this morning but must have missed the button, so I am starting anew since things have changed. It is very mild 40f 4c and again cloudy. Oh I wish the gloom would go!

There are so many variants regarding care for the challenged or elderly with lots of levels to cover their needs and abilities. I have seen some very good places and others that were not so nice. I found the secret to making sure their care is proper and consistent is to visit. A lot. And at different times of day.

The funniest experience I had was when someone I was watching over had misplaced his dentures. So I went down to try to help him find them and was sent to the office where they had a bucket full of them! And what was funny about it was that I could and did identify them.

I've got the fruit prepared for the 4 fruit marmalade. The peel is in the fridge to soak and soften overnight. I think I'd best get the lemon/lime fruit mixture prepared too. Or not, maybe I'll do that tomorrow I also made a big batch of potato salad to have on hand for grazing this week. The laundry for today is all done and put away.

@Flumpy please remember that your Mum is still with you. She's in your expressions and the way you do things, and maybe even the shape of your fingers. There are so many things we receive from our parents that they don't take back when they pass. Celebrate what she gave you.

@Upsydaisy , we have over here an online resource that you can get on, and plug in the care home to see how they scored in their inspections, and if there were any reportable issues in the year. Inspection results, over here, are to be hung in a public place at the care home so all can see them. Part of my life was to memories all those regulations and make sure the care home met every single regulations, paperwork, staff numbers, care etc, proper follow through. Probably why I can be so bitchy, I never settled for anything but the best. My motto was "to always be survey ready", meaning at anytime if the government were to walk into the care home unannounced all would be ready for them to nit pic, etc. I ran my 10 group homes the same way, even though their regulations were not as tight as a care center but all my homes came out perfect after any inspection.

Working in hospitals was also interesting, they run by a different set of regulations. So I guess in all I worked maintaining 4 types of regulations for human services.

There is an position with the Office of Aging called the Ombudsman, I toyed with the idea of applying , even part-time, they go into care homes when there are issues, resolve the issues, do some inspections etc. But, Not sure I feel like putting that hat on again.

 

@CanadianLori , oh yes the mis-placement of dentures, yep, we taught our staff after every meal to fiddle some with the dinner napkin as that is where clients would put them. Also hearing aids. One of the places I had put a check sheet in place for staff to check off that they indeed helped the client put them in their mouth, or seen them in their mouth. They can also engrave the name on the persons dentures.

 

I’ve been told I’m very like my mum which I’m very proud of, a lady in the hospice said I have her eyes, hands, mannerisms, hair colour and figure…think we where cloned, I will carry on her kind personality

As the weather is looking pretty good here today I want to open up the coldframes and check the plants over and water any that are in need . I want to also check the strawberry plants that are housed in the smaller frame too.

That about sums up my day....all pretty quiet here at the mo.

redstar ,yes we too have the same online resources, it applies to all areas of care giving. I worked in similar circumstances under such regulations and inspectors too. So I am fortunate in being very well informed through first hand experience, one of my sisters works in Social Services too so between us we make a force to be reckoned with...the wool definitely can't be pulled over our eyes.

At one point it was suggested that I apply for an inspectors post within my own specific field of expertise and I did in fact give it serious thought . I had ( and still do) a good eye for quickly recognising when regulations were not be upheld / met....sadly I could see it all too often when I was out and about.

I ran my own business as you did yours....I could happily accommodate any unannounced government lead inspection without any qualms at all. I had pride in myself that all regulations were met to a very high standard every single day, this included ensuring daily risk assessments to include maintaining safely for all for who came on site during the 6 year period of very extensive building works too, so this meant a very wide and differing range of knowledge had to be gained to ensure all the vast and varying guidelines and regulations were met. I was very proud to be rated as Outstanding in all my inspections.......and I had many!! Inspection results over here are online for all to see as well as having to be legally displayed in the setting too.

My own personal work ethos was... I chose to offer care/ education to all who sought it and I would supply it to the highest standard possible.

The laws and regulations were embedded into my brain ...and that imo is where they should be for all who decide to work in offering the public the highest levels of care/ safeguarding and education.

An achievement that in our retirement it seems we can both look back on with great pride and say we delivered.

A hazy sky here this morning and forecast to be such all day but warm.

I plan to get out for an hour today, did over two yesterday, and continue tidying. I have to do it in the wheelchair as I can't stand, bend and hold something in my hands at the same time. J has to to and fro with heavy things like pots for me. Hopefully he will trim the top of the Iochroma today, a five minute job ... I have done the lower section. With my garden it rarely needs tending to.

The rest of the day will be relaxing and a movie or two.

It’s a dry sunny Sunday here, just had breakfast in bed Lemon curd on toast and cereals followed by biscuit flavoured Yorkshire tea yummy!.
Going to jet wash my mucky car today then later meet up with my Dad, brother and sister in law for a meal to celebrate mums birthday like we always did…. I will keep you posted…….enjoy your movie Victoria, do you know what your watching ? Or still deciding?

@Flumpy I love lemon, anything that's got lemons in it. Yum.

I won't be watching a movie today but my show is on this morning so I have three hours of listening and glancing at it while cooking and canning the marmalade. There are lots and lots of adverts throughout the airings too which are the right length for changing loads in the clothes washer/dryer machines or vacuuming a hall way or whatever, so lots and lots of little chores get done too

Neither of us play guitar. J sold them in a music store in Alabama for a couple of years and has a "hobby" here of buying and selling them.

J decides what we watch and hasn't said yet. On the odd occasion he has to change his choice ... because it is not to my liking!

Did two hours in the garden on the pots so now going to have a sausage and onion burger.

Yes, @Upsydaisy I do look back and know in all the positions I had there was always perfect standards met providing the best care for human services. And knowledge that I have train a few to replace me and continue. There was a moment I did interview for a Federal inspectors position of care centers across the state of PA, I turned it down, just liked where I was too much I guess. The salary also was not greatly larger to get me to leave than I was already making.

Anyway, on to whatever in the house needs doing. Maybe I can get outside and prune something later.
