I think it can help to lay them on sand as it's easier to level it off.
But compaction before laying and after is how they normally do it I think.
Just for an improvised path, if the ground is already compacted, and you can get them level I wouldn't bother.

Yes, there's a roof but all the balconies on the ground floor stick out about a foot or so from those above so when the birds sit on the balcony railing their dropping fall into our balcony!

          Hi,

If we have a summer this year Andy you'll think the bricks are concreted in. :)

          Kind regards, Colin.

Yes you can do that but have to put something on top like more soil.

Went down to the allotment to pick salads, the recent warmish weather has meant there would have been enough to pick for a meal at least. But I forgot to take a bag with me and had none spare down there. So I did some weeding instead and added to the dalek compost bin which is chock full of worms, can't wait to get the older stuff onto the greenhouse bed in May just before the toms go in . Some of my soft neck garlic has sprouted that I planted three weeks ago, the others still lagging behind. Rhubarb is threatening to wake up, as are the blueberries.

Another day of rain  . Done another round of seed sowing this afternoon. Got a bit bored sat in so ventured back out in the rain and prepared the site for two new roses to go on the pergola, Decided on one rose Iceburg but still humming and aahing about the second one .
Yesterday I did a bit on the garage site, emptied a part bag of sand and commandeered some while I were at it . Moved a large hydrangea to where the builder bag were and spread some wood chip around. Planted some off cuts from my rhubarb on the garage site for next door.

Some pictures of the pergola / archway I built for my mum last week . I may add some more brace on it , and painting , the curve for were the devil to cut need a big bandsaw to so them easy but got there in the end. . Rose Gertrude Jekyll and probably a clematis is to be planted on it. DSC_0923.JPG DSC_0924.JPG

What variety of Indigofera are you growing @noisette47 ? I had pendula but the snails repeatedly stripped the bark which probably caused its demise , I'd like another one though.

Cut the main lawn and trimmed the edges. When the ground dries up a bit I shall make proper edges.

                      Also continued pressure washing :phew:

I shoveled the snow to make a path to one of the greenhouses and retrieved some pots that were all ready to be used. I had filled most of my pots last year immediately after planting out their contents and cleaning them. It sure made it quick work to pot up my dahlia roots today.

And I brought out the cleome-seeds-on-soil which were in the refrigerator.

I've always had a thing against landscape fabric. I know lots of people use it and why but I just think it's pointless, and fully appreciate it may be irrational. Once it's done then detritus still builds up and seedling, weeds etc can grow in it so why bother?
I shall see how the ground is when I dig it out a bit and probably use the sand though :blue thumb:

All I did today was to take down the 2 black hanging baskets & put them on the floor. In time I will plant them up again & hang them back up.

As we have a yellow warning for yet more rain I took the 3 troughs with yellow Violas off the balcony railings & put them on top of the black hanging baskets. They are so wet that the fungi from last year are growing in them again now! .
