Been a damp winter here and compost left in old pots, no plants in them, is soaking. They all had broken teracotta in them all smaller pieces. In the end they ended up with soil and roots with the crocs embedded in them so could I just leave them out ?

I will be planting various things like lavender that don't need a lot of water. Barring weird weather we should have a dry summer and I can easily water them if needed.

Just seems a bit pointless putting these in, the pots sit on gravel so can drain into that.

I think it's best to fill the whole pot with compost to get a bigger rootball that can resist watering issues. I will put a croc over the drainage hole sometimes just to stop compost running out.

Don't think I've ever bought a plant and found crocks in the bottom of the pot.

Better to reley on using a well draining compost IMO.

I also put a crock over the drainage hole to stop too much compost being washed out and often stand pots on little 'feet' or bricks to keep them off the ground. I find if pots stand on gravel the roots just come out from the drainage holes and run into it, and then it's difficult to move them.

No crocks in my pots. I put a small piece of wire mesh over the drainage hole to stop slugs getting in.

I put a piece of weed membrane over the hole instead of using crocks.

I only crock the big hole in a clay/terracotta pot, not at all in plastic ones

Must get round to printing some more

What a fantastic idea! I will be using that

I'm sorry but I still don't understand what you mean. I was talking about those little things you can get to stand pots on, to keep them off the ground. I don't know how you can print them ...

@Michael Hewett - if one has a 3d printer, you can design little useful things that you can print using a plastic filament. It is like strimmer line and gets heated up in the printer to melt it and extruded like you do with icing to build up the shape of the thing you're building. I have printed plastic shapes to hold my polycarbonate sheets inside the greenhouse, and corners to hold the aluminium square section tubes to make a gantry for led lights over my orchids. I hadn't thought of printing pot feet.
