I shall be waiting some time yet before sowing any of mine.

I can't remember what my father used to grow; it would've been whatever he picked up from the local market.

My dad grew Gardeners Delight, a big yellow hybrid beef called Golden Boy and the occasional Tigerella. That was about it until Sungold made an appearance.

Finally caved in a sowed my first tomatoes. Impressed that I lasted so long as I normally don't make it past Jan.

All new varieties in this batch, although have already messed up the labelling with the first three!

                    Jersey Giant
                    Amana Orange
                    Amish Gold
                    Chocolate Pear

Will continue to sow throughout march and end up with way too many as usual.

I've no idea what the names of my first tomatoes were. I remember growing them on on balconies when we used to live in Spain which is where I first started growing them. Probably seeds from supermarket toms! I do remember sowing seeds from some really tiny tomatoes I got from the supermarket opposite where we lived & they grew into big plants & gave 1000s of tiny toms! I didn't save any of my own seeds. In fact, until last year I'd never grown toms from my own saved seeds - I'd never saved any! :heehee:

Yes - that happens to me...

Still, given in again and planted Jersey Devil, Sungold and some kebab shop chillies!

I'm going to sow all the same ones again at the end of the month too - and see how they differ at different stages of the season. Hopefully I can remember to take notes. Or at least not lose the notes.

It might help but usually soil isnt calcium deficient. Its also insoluble in that form but bacteria and fungi convert it to soluble forms.
Calcium deficiency is usually local inside the plant when it cant get water from one place to another, eg. due to drought. Ive also heard BER is a genetic issue but that could apply to everything :dbgrtmb:

Give it a try, cant hurt.

                                Over simplistic I fear

                                read down ' ingredients'
"Many different types of antacid are available. Some are sold under a brand name and others are named after their main ingredient. Brands include Gaviscon (alginic acid) and Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate).

                                Ingredients to look for include:

                                • aluminium hydroxide
                                • magnesium carbonate
                                • magnesium trisilicate
                                • magnesium hydroxide
                                • calcium carbonate
                                • sodium bicarbonate
Some antacids also contain other medicines, such as an alginate (which coats your gullet with a protective layer) and simeticone (which reduces flatulence)."
If calcium is required, why not use garden lime or chalk ?
