At a public meeting held by the highways dept about the new motorway junction they were building they were asked how they would stop people using the very narrow winding local country road very close to the junction as a rat run to the motorway (the road that Rod Stewart was in the news last year about the potholes in it).

The reply was that nobody would bother to use it! There were some very choice words used at the meeting about their reply. The end result was the potholes mentioned above.

So Highways put up signs saying 'Narrow Road Local Traffic Only'. Which, of course, was totally ignored. They then changed the signs to very large ones saying 'Residents of ...... Only' making not a blind bit of difference.

Satnavs don't read road sign! :nonofinger:

The repair to the potholes that the council made to the road only worked for a matter of weeks. Now there are potholes in the road and deep ruts at the as there is water continuously running across the road from the high field on one side down the filed on the other side to the river.

Large vehicles are always getting stuck because of oncoming traffic and a very large lorry carrying about a dozen cars caused chaos the other week.

Are they doing anything about it? No! Reason given:- they'll soon learn not to go down there. :wallbanging:

I wonder if all councils have a special training school where practicality, sense and humility is removed.

One of my friends, a retired road engineer, was banned by his wife from going to any public planning meetings after getting so annoyed that he stood up and said all their planners spend all day hunting for a brain cell! :loll:

I've only read a little of this thread, but -re the potholes, I was reading recently that driving instructors now teach their clients how to avoid them during lessons. Didn't they give Rod grief about his hole mending too?
They should have asked him to stop singing...
I walked along a road a few days ago, quite near one of the local parks. The guys are very industrious, sorting out and redoing the pavements, while the road itself looks like a bomb hit it. The houses there are enormous so I hate to think what they pay in C. Tax.

Hardly anyone even walks on the pavements - they all drive Beamers and Audis and top of the range luxury cars just to go 200 yards.

It was a good publicity stunt and worked well. As the council wasn't doing anything despite numerous calls about the almost impossible state of the road he hired a lorry of gravel to fill in the holes. He just did enough to have the photo taken and then the others finished it. The council came and did the holes with tarmac the next week - after all the publicity in the media. :heehee:

Unfortunately they did a rubbish job by not using the right type of tarmac. The holes came back within a month. They then did the surface of the road (almost) properly. It hasn't helped a great deal! :nonofinger:.

                Hence my post above. :dunno:

As locals a lot of us have stopped using that road as it is too dangerous with deep ruts at the sides of the road caused by the heavy vehicles trying to get past each other. None of us want to meet an oncoming lorry carrying a dozen cars when the road is barely wide enough for two cars - at a squeeze.

                Signed,
                Grumpy Old Man :old:

Aye - his [Rod's] Ferrari was getting stuck in the holes @shiney :roflol:
                  My heart bleeds for him...

I used to be a big fan back in the day -- when he was actually good. :heehee:

We have an access road here at the back of the properties -terraced, which we have to repair, and one of the residents asked everyone to donate a tenner a few years back, and he and a few others then filled the holes. Did a good job. Last year, the first section of the road was quite bad, and when I saw a couple of chaps doing some work on the public bit, I asked them if they fancied doing a wee 'weekend homer'. The guys said it would be £350. Another resident then chipped in and said he'd organise it all. All fine until he notified us of the payment amount. Rather high IMO. Next time I saw him [and I'm quite friendly with him] I said - did you get a poor return on the request for cash donations? Oh no says he - I kept some money back to fill any other holes myself.
Needless to say, I won't be contributing to anything else he fancies 'fixing'. It should have worked out at about 12 - 15 quid each, but he got 26 from everyone who contributed.

I'm sure you're right @shiney and I know he does plenty of good work. I was being a bit flippant.
The fact that he's on good terms with all his exes tells you something about him :)

I saw him many, many decades ago, with The Faces, but I was a bit disappointed with his performance. Such is the way of things though. Still - I'm glad I saw him before he went to America and started trotting out all the rubbishy stuff through the late 70s and into the 80s!
