I thought it might be interesting - well it interests me- for members to post unfamiliar words that might or might not be useful. Actually, the ones you'd never use are more fun.
Also I'd be interested words or phrases that annoy you.

How I long for the smell of petrichor! Won't be long now :)

The phrase that makes me cringe is 'gob smacked'.

Petrichor a great word for a wonderful smell. Shame you usually need a drought first, though.

@Cassia usually followed by ' so suck it up' - equally annoying.

Indeed. An estate agent said it to me & he got a rather frosty reply from me.

I usually get accused of using words of 4-6 syllables when two will do  :heehee:. So I tone it down here on GC. :roflol:

As the President of The Grumpy Old Men's Club I tend to be curmudgeonly and certainly can't be accused of being pauciloquent.

We had a curmudgeons' corner on the GW site. You might have liked it @shiney ,
Off to look up pauciloquent in case I need it at some point
                  Pauciloquent - maybe

I’m going to have to drop that into a conversation. I’m a crossword fan & I can honestly say I’ve never come across pauciloquent.

Being an amateur philologist and lexicologist I still try not to be sesquipedalian :hate-shocked:. I think I shall keep out of this thread now

As @shiney beat me to sesquipedalian, I'll have to go with antediluvian, often applied to Archimandrites and of interest to antiquarians.
By the way alliteration is astonishing.

As I typed mine before the heavens just opened antediluvian is the perfect word for it. :rolleyespink:

I had a job where our team was talking with clients over the phone most of the day. I introduced a game of "word of the day", anyone who managed to get that into a call got a point.

"Antediluvian" was my triumph and absolute favourite

English language is a treat :)

                              My garden shed :yikes:.

To those that don't 'understand' the contents of my shed, it's a jumbled store of floccinaucinihilipilification.

(can't even pronounce that word, yet alone remember it).
