I liked the buses you could jump on the back! And stand on the platform to quickly jump off if you were in a hurry!

The Routemasters were a breed apart - not the nicest things to drive if I am honest... loud, cold and heavy steering. I doubt I'd even be able to get in one nowadays. You'd be amazed the number of folks who jumped off the back without looking for street furniture etc - many, many accident reports had to be put in for things that really were nothing to do with the driver.

I didn’t either. One of the kind mods thought it might be because I’m using an iPad and added my signature for me, so you could ask if you haven’t managed it yet.

I have a feeling that it is a number of posts thing... I reckon when you have hit a given number of posts (10 or 20 I think), it unlocks things.

Can you imagine, Health and safety would have field day with these if they were still in service.
I remember as a kid being told by the conductor to always jump off in the direction the bus was moving rather than backwards, that was suicide.

There's a couple of doorless routes in central London I think. . Or maybe it's just that they have a rear exit. I'm not sure now . There was certainly a knack to getting off before it stopped. I think most of the accidents occurred when someone tried to get on a moving bus. Never was a wise move.

            Those were the days,

            I remember these trolley buses

And, before that, was also on one of the last trams during the last week

I was much younger and fitter in those days! Couldn't do any jumping on or off these days!

We had one on those newer buses mentioned above - guy was 'saturated in alcohol' and pressed the emergency buttons above the doors as the bus was in motion... full motion. The interlocks should have prevented it and indeed under testing, the door interlocks did work from 5mph.. trouble was, that the early computer had been given a "range" to switch the interlocks on of 5-10mph... so above 10mph, it switched them back off. Poor sod ended up with severe life changing injuries as he hit a parked car.

I had one on this exact bus:

I had departed from Roehampton Asda, gone under the tunnel (quite a few folks on) and thought to myself that the bus seemed helluva noisy... anyway, you come immediately onto a slip road onto the A3 and it is a 'boot down and go' job as it is a 50mph dual carriageway - and these DAF's could go... The more the speed built up, the noisier it became, so I shot a look over to the central mirror to see that the back doors were wide open and there was a lady standing there, holding onto the pole by the open doors as though there was nothing wrong. I almost had heart failure.

When we stopped, I asked her why she didn't shout or something and she replied that she thought I had done it because it was warm!

There are some heritage ones running around still - modified engines in them, so whilst they are not Euro 6 as far as I know, they are a hell of a lot cleaner than the originals. Don't sound as nice though.

For those who want a bit of nostalgia noise wise, go to YouTube and search for Gardner 6LXB or Leyland o680. Those noises will take you back a bit - admittedly not as far back as @shiney :heehee:

It wouldn't keep the picture of the trolley buses until I played around with the format!

Are those buses that you actually drove @Fat Controller ? My first home with my late first OH was very near Putney Bridge. I used to take a bus from there to go to work at the New Charing Cross Hospital. I was a nurse. I have also worked at Roehampton, met 1st OH there when he broke his leg in a car crash on the A3 and I was on men's orthopaedics.
