My wife loves roses, she bought some online from Thompson & Morgan last year but despite them supposedly have strong, pleasant scents there's little aroma from them at all.

I'd like to buy her some really excellent, strong and very pleasant scented rose bushes as a surprise present so I'm looking for recommendations please, not only for the rose itself but where to buy online.

    Any suggestions please?

    Thanks.

I'd go to a specialist firm like David Austin (the prices have sky rocketed) or Classic Roses or Trevor White.

White currently list 322 cultivars in their most fragrant list. https://www.trevorwhiteroses.co.uk/?swoof=1&pa_highly-fragrant=highly-fragrant-roses

I would narrow them down to colours she likes and then to available space for mature size. Then hopefully you'll have a list you can investigate properly and maybe ask for members' experiences with any of them to be certain they have a great fragrance

In addition to the suggestions from Mrs Hilliard above (Arthur Bell being my absolute favourite), I love the scent of
        • The Anniversary Rose / Sweet Parfum de Provence (gorgeous pink, from lots of places e.g. Eastcroft and Peter Beales)
        • Gertrude Jekyll and Eustacia Vye (from David Austin Roses)
        • Lavender Lassie (from Trevor White Roses)
        • Princess Charlène de Monaco ( from Henry St ... actually in stock for once but I am not able to post a link as a newbie)
        • John Paul II (white HT, available from Welling Roses on FB)

Glad you are here @Mrs Hillard

My most fragrant roses are, or have been, Louise Odier, Comte de Chambord, Gertrude Jekyll and Fragrant Cloud.

My all time favourite is Albertine for fragrance but it does need a good soil and only flowers once.
Maigold is another climber with a very different fragrance which flowers all summer.
These are both climbers. Even lovelier with a pale blue clematis like Blue Angel growing through it.
