What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

I watched a couple of Buzzards circling today and also heard the first Cuckoo this year.

 

Rescued a jackdaw from one of the chimneys earlier, which meant dismantling the flue pipe. Think it was grateful, looked a bit bemused at first, but flew off sharpish. Love their silver eyes. I guess it was scoping out a site for this year's nest.

 

Where I live, I don't get all these lovely birds that you have caught on camera since January, but I had a first bumble bee following me into the greenhouse. This reminds me of doing something with the entrance and windows so that the bees don't get stuck. Maybe I can find something that guarantees the airflow but doesn't allow to fly into the greenhouse.

 

Hi @simone_in_wiltshire - perhaps a screen door made of fine mesh? The only problem is that you may need bees for pollination, depending on what you're using the gr'house for, so leaving a vent or window open is the best, all round solution.
Is that early for cuckoos where you are @Sheal ? It's usually another few weeks before we get them down here, although I never hear them in this area, but certainly for the area around Arrochar/L. Lomond it's usually mid to end of April when you start hearing them.

 

Wow! That does seem early, you’re so lucky. I rarely hear cuckoos.

 

The lower slopes of the group of Munros at Arrochar is prime country for them @Golarne
I could hear them last year when I was on one of the hills at Crianlarich, a bit furth 'up' from those hills, and I tried doing a video, but they were too far away for the camera to pick the sound up. I did manage to catch the gazillions of midges on the screen though!

 

Good morning @simone_in_wiltshire last year I made a screen door for the greenhouse, mine was to keep out the Collared Doves but something similar might be of use.

 

Lots of activity in the big pond in the last 2 days. I sat near the edge listening to the happy chortling and watching the ripples fan out over the surface in the sunshine. I think that is what it was?

@fairygirl the only purpose my greenhouse has is to be used for germination and growing young plants. No pollinators needed there.

keeping company with an Egyptian Goose.

 

There was a brimstone butterfly flapping around me this morning.

 

Yes, I would say about three weeks early. We've had some fairly good, dry weather here over the last month and that's probably urged all the birds into thinking about the breeding season. I live rurally with a valley at the end of my garden and although I've never seen a Cuckoo their voices carry across there.
