I just want to place it on record that not all of us blokes would judge someone on age or gender or any other factor that is not relevant to the conversation.

My rule of thumb goes like this: Are genitals involved?

If no, then gender is irrelevant.

If yes, I probably shouldn't be having such a conversation unless it's with my wife or a doctor.

As a female Manager with a team of 5 male assistant managers it’s amazing how many times people ignore me and look to my assistants for answers etc. Luckily I have worked with most of them at their level for years before I was promoted so they play to it. It can be really funny when they say “I’ll just check with my boss”, then turn to me and say “ what do you want me to do?”, there have been a lot of private laughs between us and red faces around the table.

I go to the pub once a week for about 40 minutes and the bartenders like it when I'm there because everybody minds their manners. Last Sunday I had to tell 3 big fellows to leave when they finished their drink. They argued for a moment but I told them they were spewing too many f sharps and to come back when they cleaned out their mouth.

The bartender thanked me and she is about my size. I even escorted one of the known late night brawlers out of there one day. Gave him a time out at the tables outside!

Ena Sharples has nothing on me!

Edit: and regarding car and home repairs, in my opinion there are not enough people who learn about their appliances/vehicles to make sensible decisions - either male or female. I think having done lots of my own repairs has saved me tolerating babble and nonsense from tradespeople.

I'm a which member so I always have a look at what they recommend, but more importantly, the 'don't buys'
What we need to be aware of is that companies with an excellent reputation go out of business and the receivers sell off the name and the good will.
Have you tried Thornton's chocolates recently?
Similarly, a company with a name for quality will decide that they can get a product made cheaper elsewhere. You buy it. You're stuck with it. So what? Reputation is sooo last century! They've made some money.

I think that's true of many things, not just vehicles and appliances.

For most of my career I was a software developer. When I started learning, way back in the 1980s, I had to know how the actual chips in the computer worked. This was necessary to write efficient code. By the end of my time as a software dev, about 7 years ago when I sidestepped into data analysis, it was no longer considered necessary to understand all the details, as all that was done for you by this time. Because I still have a passing interest in software development, I read various professional articles on the subject. It worries me a bit. It seems people are just asking AI to generate code, and then they're using it without really understanding it. I did a little experiment with ChatGPT where I asked it to generate a fairly basic database definition. It did it. The code it generated would work. But it was full of security flaws that even an amateur could hack.

The point is people don't care anymore. They just want things to work, and if it breaks, they just want to either replace it or get someone else to fix it. The day will come, probably sooner than many think, when all the people that actually know how stuff works are either retired or dead.

              My new moan...

Why is it so effing hard to buy compost, in bags, for delivery?! The Compost Centre, which looked to be absolutely ideal for what I wanted.. 8-9 weeks delivery.

Wickes had more or less what I need (I could get by with it) - £30 delivery charge which I think is a bit cheeky when spending the thick end of £200 on various products with them.

I bought a bulk bag of top soil from a local company and they delivered it FOC in less than a week.
Might be better trying that kind of thing rather than from the big companies.

Trouble is, I can't do the bulk bag thing because of the layout of our house mostly - it has to be bags. I'd go and check to see if the local garden centres would deliver a bulk number of bags... but I have no car currently to do so.

Yep Wickes are odd! Between around £70-100+ it's free delivery, above that it's bulk delivery cost. Not sure of the exact amounts, but I got £108 worth last week and delivery was free... So it might worth doing 2 deliveries?

Has Wickes compost improved again? Their compost used to be really good - and then it wasn't.
Maybe you had a lucky escape @Fat Controller . It costs a bit extra to transport hazardous waste.

Just bought this today from B&Q, they're being delivered on Tuesday - orders over £75 delivery is free. I expect both B&Q and Wicks compost would be more less the same.
