Slugs and greenhouses

I had my first greenhouse last year. I was plagued by slugs . Didn’t realise at first because the little tinkers were hiding on the underside of pots.
What do you do to reduce slugs?

 

Have to agree with Loofah....and not those namby pamby ones, but the ones with the 'good' stuff in them. Not scattered willy nilly around the garden, but in enclosed areas such as the greenhouse, cold frame etc.

Sniping them with scissors...quick and decisive eventually it controls the population. Haven't bothered with pellets for a couple of years and my hostas have never looked better. It just takes torch hunting every couple of nights for a month and it breaks the breadin cycle. It's tedious to start with but then you need to do the raid much less frequently.

 

I use slug pellets in the greenhouse but not outside. I only use a few and put them under something.

 

I don’t use any pesticides so resort to continually checking under the rims of any seed trays (a popular spot for my slugs), under any pots etc. My pots are easy to lift as generally quite small as I plant into soil beds. I also do a good clean out each winter, but must admit not very tidy or clear of debris otherwise.

I haven’t bothered doing any night-time patrols but then I haven’t got too bad a problem. If it was worse, I would. Sometimes when I water, I also wet the path and internal paved edges (our frame sits on a rim of slabs) and that can encourage them to appear (just like they do on grass in the rain). Any I spot I throw into the compost or our wild area.

 

My greenhouse has a hardcore and gravel floor so there are few slugs, except the ones I bring in.
Snails are a different issues.

Why do you bring them in.

Just have visions of you collecting slugs and putting them in the greenhouse.

 

The slug pellets that are available these days are not toxic to any wildlife except some varieties of slugs so they're quite safe to use AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE DOSING INSTRUCTIONS and don't overuse them.

I use them in my greenhouse and occasionally outside in Spring when the slugs decimate new shoots from some plants.

It's been a really mild winter in most of the UK so there will be even mose slugs and snails than usual this year

The old toxic slug pellets that were based on metaldehyde have been banned and can no longer be sold in the UK

 

I've got a very small quantity of the metaldehyde pellets left , only on rare occasions a few in the greenhouse works wonders.
Got some of the so called friendlier ones but not sure how effective they are.

I think the problem is they are an unknown quantity as you don't see any dead ones,

 

They hitch a lift on the bottom of seed trays, pots etc.
