What's buzzing or flying near you 2024 ?

Same here. Though there have been a few near Cardigan this year which caused a real stir, but of course they were hiding the day we drove up there

 

Just watched two crows mating in the garden Must be Spring!

 

I have seen more ladybirds in the past two weeks than I did during the whole of last year. I hope it bodes well.

 

Razorbills and a sleepy Fulmar, Durlston CP cliffs, Swanage.

 

I saw my first Peacock butterfly of the year yesterday.

 

Yes, I had a Peacock butterfly keeping me company today while I sorted out a flower bed. It must of hung around for an hour or so and seemed very interested, for some reason, in the FBB powder I was scattering.

 

Good the more the better as I've recently see a pair chasing squirrels from the garden

 

Spotted this yesterday on the house wall overhang

 

I've only seen two bumblebees this year - one the other day passing through, and one last month who came to be revived with sugar water, and I hope he survived.
We don't get many butterflies, I don't know why, and we never see them this early. I'm hoping to tempt them in with the buddleia, but it's the slowest growing one in the entire world.

 

Usually takes me several tries to catch up with these 'summer' visitors to the UK but today, after a long hike into the hills, these Ring Ouzels were waiting for me.

 

Fab! I just read that one was seen near Strumble Head, hmm, would it still be there if I drove across to try to see my very first Ring Ouzel? Unlikely

 

I got my first Peacock yesterday too. We had unexpected sunshine in the morning. I grabbed the camera and here they are.

 

I also took a picture of this fella. First, I thought it's a Robin, but a closer look and zooming in, it doesn't look like a Robin, but what is it?



It's the second time that I see Red Kites flying over our area. It looks like they come even to us. Had t wait some years to see them again. We used to have lots of them in Maidenhead, where we lived until 2015.

They can often look like that - slightly stretched out, for want of a better phrase! Telling the others it's their spot

 

Good news and bad news in my garden today … good news as I saw a female blackcap in my garden for the first time. She walked around the pond and then I watched as she had a good bath, splashing around, of course by the time I got my phone to take a photo she’d gone!

Bad news … my garden seems to have an outbreak of Trichomonosis, the awful disease which affects finches. A couple of weeks ago a female bullfinch showed signs of it and died. I reported this in my weekly report to the British Trust for Ornithology and they said whereas they normally recommend taking the feeders down for a couple of weeks, I should carry on feeding. They are conducting studies in gardens which show signs of an outbreak and they asked if I saw any other birds showing signs to contact them. Today I have seen another female bullfinch and a Siskin showing signs so I have emailed them in case they want to use my garden for the study. I must admit I’ve taken the sunflower heart feeder down as the female Bullfinch was just sat in the underhanging tray and I just couldn’t bear seeing all the other birds joining her and possibly getting infected. Hopefully I’ll hear from them soon with further advice.
