I was definitely vaccinated and I was born in the 1960s. I still got whooping cough though, when I was about seven (I can remember my parents talking to each other and saying no it can't be, she's had the vaccine, and then the doctor coming and saying in his very condescending tone "it's what we call whooping cough"). It was very bad, and for months afterwards I couldn't run or laugh without coughing. But maybe it would have been even worse if I hadn't had the vaccine.

The vaccine was brought out for general use in schools from 1957 although it had been around for a couple of decades. It's use dropped off considerably for a while in the 70's when it was thought it could cause brain damage.

I had the Smallpox vaccine eight times when working in the merchant navy in the early 60's. Some countries would not accept the production of a valid vaccination certificate from another country . I've had no problem with Smallpox but suffered side effects, for a couple of decades, said (by the medical profession) to be caused by over-vaccination.

We only just had running water @Fat Controller :heehee:

I had whooping cough as an adult - late 20's. Not funny at all. But then I also had chicken pox when I was in my early 40's - that was even less funny.
I was born in '57, but we obviously didn't get any vaccine for the cough. I don't remember it anyway.

My younger sister (14 years younger) didn't get the vaccine because of the brain damage concerns.

Our village doesn't have any street lighting now. :dunno:

I remember when I was at school the street lights were still gas (honestly) and in the winter we used to talk to the lamplighter when he used to come along on his bike with the ladder hooked over his shoulder. They later modernised the light and he was able to light it by using a long pole. I guess the long pole was lighter than a ladder and it was much more effective from a time point of view - he didn't have to climb up and down the ladder.

The outskirts of my town blend into the nearest village. You can tell when you've reached the village because the street lighting stops.

I remember that too, and there used to be a circular mark on my upper left arm where I had a vaccination for something - I think that was the whooping cough and diptheria one.

I remember in the early 60s everyone had to be vaccinated for small pox (I think it was)
my mother and I had no side effects but my father and brother were very ill after it. My brother was about 7 or 8 yrs old and he couldn't get out of bed for days. I was early teens and didn't feel unwell at all.

I think that came out after I had had mine as I seem to remember having two injections a year or so apart along with the diphtheria.
I don't remember small pox being compulsory but I do remember we all got screened for TB, and most got the jab, I ended up just getting an X Ray.

Had my second shingles jab last week they don't really worry me and I felt this one ,nurse said it had just come out of the fridge and can be more sensetive when it's cold
So next time I shall make my appointment for later on in the day !!!!!

A week later I still know about it or maybe it's something to do with me lugging pots of me planted Dahlia tubers around

Yes, and some kids would get theirs and then run around to the end of the queue for a second helping!
