It started with Tony Blair, Education Education Education, unfortunately its not a one size fits all.
We just don't have a cross section of people anymore, the education system has turned out some really impressive people, but if you don't make the grade you are a failure in the eyes of the system.

It was ever so slightly before that. It was John Major that turned the education system into a private sector cash cow. I remember because I went to a protest in London just for the fun of it, even though it didn't affect me as I was only a part time student funded by my employer. We chanted about Johnny Major being a right wing so and so, and a friendly policeman confiscated a banner someone had asked me to carry.

Tony Blair just capitalised on the foundations John Major had already laid down, when he did his Education speech.

Its got nothing to do with the private or public sector, its about over educating everyone and creating this thing about university, and living the university lifestyle.
They suggest to the kids that is the only road to take.
      Dont mention gap years.

It works for some people, but not everyone.

When I was a lad....

Most secondary schools in my day were either male or female (Comprehensive schools hadn't yet started properly).

In the ones for girls they taught cookery one lesson a week and, presumably, nutrition. In the one for boys we were taught nutrition during biology lessons.

There was no need for any more as I think most people had to eat fairly healthily as food was still rationed. :noidea: I didn't get fat until later in life :heehee:

It's got everything to do with the private sector. Universities are big businesses that generate a lot of tax revenue. The more brainwashed kids you can squeeze for upwards of 9k per year then more revenue you generate.

University students became "economic units" once fees and loans and interest charges were brought in. The more you have, the more profit you make. That is the only reason for the gov target of 50% of school leavers going to university.

Funny how that applies to a lot of the issues we are seeing today. Sowed the seeds and swanned off into the sunset.

I'm not sure it is going to help, given Starmer and Reeves swanned off to Davos in January.

It doesn't. They will spend the next 10-15 years blaming the Tories, then it will switch sides again. I'd much rather see them all booted out.

As long as politicians think they can tell people what they need and should be doing instead of listening to what they need and want and taking steps to value their constituents as people and not votes, we will continue to have poorly motivated and managed governments headed by people who still think we proles can't think for ourselves.

Government should be about making life better and safer for us all. Too often they are just lining their pockets and, on the few occasions they try something useful, they get it badly wrong and that includes introducing university fees and thus reducing social mobility prospects for the "working classes"; financing hospital bulding using private loan systems; ignoring the need for proper building standards in public and private sectors - Grenfell and the current spate of collapsing schools and hospitals and much more along the same vein; privatising national assets needed by everyone - especially water companies and local public transport.

I'll stop there or I'll be here all night and still miss things.

It always made me laugh about how after it all went tits up Teflon Tony threw in the towel and Gordon Brown was left holding the baby.
I know Gordon Brown was partly responsible for the mess but I think Tony took him for a mug.
