I used to rarely wear gloves but my hands seem more sensitive these days too. I usually buy the Showa 350R gloves. They last quite well for me and the small is a good fit. However I got a pair of Briers gloves as part of a Christmas present and they are lovely to wear, not to too thin or too thick. I can’t comment on their durability yet

For really vicious brambles haven’t found anything which beats my Exemplary Gardens goatskin gauntlet gloves. Very soft and comfortable to wear and long lasting. I don’t use them very often now but they were a godsend when were first here and had a very overgrown bramble jungle to clear.

I always wear gloves for gardening but I don't get on with leather ones, too thick and they go stiff. I like lightweight ones like on the link below. I don't mind who makes them so long as they are quite cheap, I go through a lot, and so long as I can get my swollen arthritic fingers into them.

I was thinking I could do with new gloves @Busy-Lizzie so I followed your link. What a great website - but now I'm spoilt for choice! Thank you.

The leather feels thick at first but gets more flexible fairly quickly. If they get a bit muddy I let the mud dry (first scrape most of it off with a trowel) and when dry just rub my hands together and most of it comes off as dust.

If they need washing, rarely do that, the leather does go quite stiff when dry but a bit of stretching the fingers, mainly in the width, then pushing your hands into them and flexing and rubbing your the hands and fingers together loosens them up again.

I tend to keep a muddy pair for muddy weeding and a cleaner pair for mowing, tool handling etc.

I use welding gloves for bramble removal, but they are a bit unwieldy for everyday chores. I’m seriously wondering whether I am going to have to put a cord on them, like children’s gloves! They are too big to go in my pockets, or the little waist pouch I carry my secateurs and thinner gloves in, but I really need to carry them with me all the time - there is always a nearby bramble to remove! Any bright ideas?

I only wear gloves for when I move slabs or something something similar. I find I can't feel what I'm doing with gloves on, and I find it awkward doing small jobs like transplanting something etc.
For compost I've got a scoop I bought in Poundstretcher (I've got 4 of them actually because I usually loose things, and with 4 scoops I can sometimes find one)

Sounds expensive but I suppose he/she could walk behind me carrying the gloves!

I use a lot of the vinyl disposable gloves for all of my gardening, but they're a one size and not very durable. They always break at the fingertips and thorns can break them, but i like them. Got a pair of leather gloves for thorny things.

Good, because Briers leather isn't strong enough to protect you from vicious thorns. Otherwise they would be too thick. :)

I've got a couple of pairs of Kent & Stowe 'Weed and Seed' gloves, stretch fabric backs and rubberised palm and fingers. Great for handling compost as they are thin enough to allow good 'feel' but thick enough to protect hands.

I must admit, the Briers ones @shiney recommended have been brilliant this weekend - - sort of found myself wondering how I managed without them.

Over the years I have tried many and come to the conclusion that a load of cheap ones suits me best. I do have some ‘good’ ones for bramble work but generally I put a hole or two in them whatever the cost. Also usually only the right hand one wears out so if anyone wants 100 left hand gloves…

Same here. I wear out expensive gloves just as fast as cheap ones, always the forefinger or thumb of the right hand, so whenever I see suitable gloves at a decent price and in my size (XS for preference, S if nothing smaller available and the price is right) I buy multiple pairs. Boyes is always worth a look if I'm in town.
