I need to sow some grass seed on some bare patches of lawn, the cheap seed I bought previously was from Wilkos which grew horribly fast, quicker than my lawn and it grew in unpleasant tufts.

I then bought some online from Boston Seeds but this never germinated. I gave some of the seed to a friend but theirs never germinated other.

So can anyone recommend a supplier and seed type please? Doesn't need to be ornamental, its just a lawn area for our dog but it's on view from our house so I want it to look decent.

    Hi,

Had a simliar situation last year and also had difficulty germinating some seeds.
Finally found this one worked for us, from The Range and other outlets.
Seems to blend into our lawn very well, no strong grasses.

What we also did was to take a large polybag and add in a handful seeds and two or three handfuls of just moist compost , mix well and leave in a warm place, turning often, and in a day or two you will just make out the very fine shoots or roots just emerging, so then spread out onto your bare patches and cover with some fine netting to kept the birds off.

Thanks, and a good tip regarding germinating in a bag of soil.

That's a great idea @ricky101 - the plastic bag. Might try that myself

@LeadFarmer I'm surprised you had trouble with Boston seeds. I've bought from them for 2 lawns in other people's gardens, and a couple of acres for my ponies and it all came up very quickly. For the lawns, I used their mix that can take being mowed very rarely, because it doesn't get too vigorous. Is it worth you contacting them about the problem you had?

I think too much time has passed for them to do anything about it now. I could give them another go and buy a different type perhaps.

Lawns and dogs don't always suit each other, if the bare patches are where the dog is going then any grass seed will struggle to germinate.

Not really from the dog, I had a new patio laid late last year and they repaired a part of the lawn that got damaged during the process by digging out and laying new turf, but some of that turf didn't take and is now bare.
