Good evening everyone. Started off cool and sunny but it's finished cool and a bit showery - not enough to do much good in terms of watering but just enough to soak you if you're walking to the compost bin with kitchen waste....

Went to a talk about the history of the old county asylum this morning. Very interesting. It opened in the mid 19C and, although some of the terminology used to describe the patients in the records is quite shocking to modern ears (stupid, feeble minded etc etc), it was interesting reading some of the staff rules. All patients to be treated with the utmost kindness and to be addressed gently and courteously by name. Physical or verbal abuse of patients would result in instant dismissal and witnessing any such abuse without attempting to stop it was regarded as complicit behaviour. Sounds like a much kinder place than the workhouse, which would have been the alternative for many of the residents.

This afternoon I've made a huge portion of tarka dal which will be for dinner tomorrow plus several portions for the freezer. One of my favourite meals. Tonight we'll have a couple of the chicken & leek pies I made on Monday with creamy mash and tenderstem broccoli.

@lizzie27 - so sorry to hear of your brother's car accident. I do hope he's ok and not too shaken.
Re your photos. Have you considered scanning them all as individual images and making up an electronic collage?
This would give you digital images which can be safely stored and backed up plus they can be shared electronically around the family - all while keeping the originals nice and safe.
You can also make digital repairs to damaged photos and you can get additional hard copies of the photos or collages printed by companies like Photobox.
I've done it with all my most precious family photos (some of which date back to the late 19C) and it gives me peace of mind knowing that if the worst happened and I lost the originals, there are digital copies stored in many different places.

      Good evening all.

I hope your photo idea works out @lizzie27. I think @Topbird ’s digital idea is excellent too. If you aren’t too savvy with computer editing, it may be worth asking the funeral director if they can help - I’ve known them do some very beautiful and dignified printed tributes.

Planning a lazy evening here with an easy omelette supper. Enjoy your evening meal folks.

Oh I am sorry @lizzie27 - it never occurred to me that you might be wanting to do the collage as part of the funeral ceremony (thank you for the headsup @AuntyRach).
My way would be intended as a long term solution for safely preserving precious memories of your beloved brother - but using hard copies is always going to be quicker if you need to sort something out quickly.
I do hope my rather crass and insensitive reply has not upset you.

Hello again. Son returned to Canberra this morning, so we had a quick trip to town for pathology donations

Good morning @PatE and all popping in a little later. Cannot believe I woke up to a frosty start this morning. I'm off to see Bestie today - we have a lot to catch up on.

@Topbird, that talk sounds absolutely fascinating. I remember when I was very young learning that the archaic word Bedlam - used for a place for the mentally ill - was a corruption of the word Bethlehem. It took me a long time to find out it came from a hospital name.

I hope everyone’s had a restful night. It’s a beautiful bright morning here in Norfolk
                but a chilly 4C.
Have a lovely time with your friend @Ladybird4
We’ve a busy day ahead, getting ready for our few days away and making sure we leave a well stocked fridge for son. :blue thumb:

So looking forward to having a day where I'm not tied to a schedule. It's been a pretty gruelling couple of days with 4 hospital appoints since Tuesday. The worse was yesterday, poor hubby had to keep still for 20 minutes while he went through a CT machine for a nuclear kidney scan. Problem is with his lymphoma one of the symptoms is that his body rages with the itches. He describes it as an army of ants with spiky running boots on marching over his body and every now and again one bites him. The hospital staff was exceedingly patient and empathetic with him. Immunotherapy starts tomorrow, and he's so looking forward to it.

So today is my 'suit myself day', just wondering how best to enjoy it.

I'm learning quite a bit of info from this chatty thread. Such a great idea @AuntyRach about uploading precious photos in several places to keep them safe. Over the years I've been adding photos to 'my family tree' on Ancestry.com next to family members so future generations will be able to see images of actual people instead of having just a name.

Take care everyone, and have a great day, I know I will :yay:

                    Good morning all.

It's colder this morning, but no frost.

I'm going to the vegetable garden section of the gardening club meeting this afternoon.

Paving stones for the path and gutters should be delivered today. OH will deal with it if I'm out. The old gutters have holes in them from the hail storm of 2022.

@Jenny_Aster I hope your husband finds the immunotherapy treatment helpful. Its not without its own side effects but it certainly helped my late brother, really slowing the growth of his multiple tumours. Sadly he succumbed to sepsis nearly five years later.

@Busy-Lizzie :) We’re going to MILs for a couple of days to help her celebrate her birthday. She lives in a lovely old stone cottage in a pretty village close to Burghley House and Stamford so going there is like a holiday. So many lovely places to visit. We take the pretty route there too, and have a picnic in a lovely spot by the river on the way.

Morning all. Another sunny but chilly morning. A friend is coming for tea and chat this afternoon so I'll attend to some domestic chores this morning.
I do hope the immunotherapy helps your husband @Jenny_Aster. It must have been very unpleasant enduring the CT scan with those symptoms. Best wishes to you both.
Enjoy meeting up with Bestie LB. Is it a foodbank day or just a nattering day?

                              Good morning all.
A lovely sunny start to the day.
I spent yesterday morning browsing garden centres with my sister.
I was very restrained and only bought some alpine plants.
Sister bought a pieris and a lovely lilac azalea.
We both noticed how dry the pots of plants were, considering all the rain we’ve had, and wondered if it’s due to the garden centres now using peat free compost.
This morning I will plant my purchases and then this afternoon both my sisters are coming for coffee.
                              Enjoy your day

@T'Bird - foodbank next week and I have some tomato and brown sauces ready to take - thanks to you - as we are always short of those.
