Can anyone identify these plants that have appeared in the garden?
The second one has popped up next to my rhubarb plant, the first one with the purple flowers seems to have popped up in quite a few places, all at the foot of the hedges.
    Thanks.

Top one looks like Honesty - the dried seed heads are often used in flower arrangements.
I get them popping up too - they're very welcome

Yes, honesty (Lunaria annua) for the first one. It self sows freely but is easy to get rid of if you don't like it - just pull them out before they set seed. Despite the name it's more of a biennial - germinates one year, flowers and sets seed the next (usually - I have had seedlings appear in spring and flower the same year).
I think the second one is possibly Lords and Ladies (Arum maculatum). I believe that's perennial and deep-rooted so much harder to get rid of.

Agree top pic is honesty (Lunaria annua.)
Botton pic is Lords & Ladies (Arum maculatum) I think.

Make sure you are wearing gloves when handling Lords and ladies

Yeah, it plagues my garden, goes very deep and the 'bulb' at the end looks just like a lump of soil, and will detach if you try and pull them up! The main issue is the seeds - leaving the very pretty seedhead on is a mistake!

I just pull off the leaves. They come up again the next yr and I repeat the procedure. I feel mean doing it, but needs must.

Arum maculatum have tubers sometimes 6 in down if you want to remove them.
