And does anyone have any thoughts on ID for this? I got it from a chap who grew it from seed (or rather, spore). He was much more of an expert than I, but couldn't be sure what it was. It's clearly an Adiantum, and I thought Adiantum aleuticum - but I'm not so sure now.

Pic #1 looks a lot like the pics of Osmunda regalis I posted on April 14th.

Yes, mine have been slower than yours (though I thought yours were earlier - not SO much slower then!)

I dug up some large ferns that are no longer in the right place because of their size and have given them to a neighbour who lost his in the bad winter.

I've spotted some self seeded ones in the greenhouse. We don't and have never had any ferns in the greenhouse but they are growing out of the edges of the paving.

I'll take some photos when I have time.

@shiney We also have ferns growing in our greenhouse that has grape vines and a pomegranate growing. We didn't plant the ferns but the spores of ferns are so very tiny and light the slightest breeze will move them a fair distance. We have the top half of the door always open so the spores were able to come in easily.

They are stunning @Plantminded. We have one that is in a sheltered spot and the fronds have been developing for some weeks with some now at least 3 feet high. Another is on the edge of our lawn and a lot bigger but the knuckles are still deep in....more exposed.

They do add a bit of drama to a garden @On the Levels, especially when you’re waiting to see if they’ve survived the winter! Do you remove your previous year’s fronds or let them fade naturally?

@Plantminded we leave the old fronds on as in nature. This also help to add some protection to the "trunk". We put leaves into the crown over winter once we know that frosts are on the way and also add some fleece.
