Words that get on your nerves

What used to be 'Branches' of a local Building Society have now been re-marketed as 'Relationship Centres'. What does that even mean?

My daughter was an early reader. She asked her dad what the Baby Changing sign meant. He told her that was where you could take naughty children to swap them.

 

I dislike having to fill in an "expiration date" for my debit card when ordering stuff on line. What's wrong with "expiry"? Surely expiration is the opposite of inspiration...

I cringe every time someone says 'reach out'. I mean I visibly crumple with cringe.

 

Unless you are drowning or swinging by your fingertips over a precipice and someone literally reaches out to you, @Mrs. B.

 

Yes I always imagine someone pathetically reaching for a hand while they're drowning in quicksand, for some reason.

I was reading an article on the BBC News site. The article was about one person but he was referred to as 'they'. I had to read back in case I'd misunderstood the article.
If a non-binary people wish to use a singular pronoun that is not gender-specific, they should invent a new word rather than appropriating a word that is already in common usage.

 

Why do people say "quite unique" or "very unique"? If it's unique it's the only one.

 

More as in: more better, more faster, more bigger etc

 

“Take care” grates with me too .. insincere words usually !
For me”journey” means going to scotland or europe … not an Experience !!!

 

People in cafes etc saying "Can I get....." I would reply "No you can't. I'm serving and I will get it for you"
