You can in that the shrub itself will not sulk ... but if you do it at any time except just after flowering, you will lose next year's flowers, as I can attest from experience. :)

I would describe it as mainly upright but with long arching branches as well and you get the majority of the flowers on these. It wants to be about 2m high and the same wide.

Yes - but if you just remove/cut back individual stems/branches [as with many shrubs] it's fine. I probably didn't make that clear
It's such a forgiving shrub though, so it doesn't mind being treated harshly!
I've often seen info stating it can/should be cut back in late winter/early spring as it's technically summer flowering and vigorous in habit, but mine always flowers throughout May and into June, so I don't usually do that.

It's just getting some buds about to open, and there's plenty on it. It'll be good in a few days time.

        :loll:

I know. I try to avoid asking after the fate of plants passed on to others. The guilt is too much.

Here in Shineyland mowing is takes up a fair amount of time and, as I don't like untidy lawn edges, trimming them is a regular job. That goes back to having opened the garden for so many years it has become a habit/obsession. :rolleyespink:

Flower beds don't have to be tidy but just have to have happy plants. With the occasional rain and a lot of sun the weeds are growing much faster than the plants. So we spend a lot of time weeding (Mrs Shiney does the majority of that as I have trouble with my back - it's a fairly recent problem for me as it only started in 1949 :roflol:).

We do the usual cutting back of shrubs and my next item on the agenda (if the boss doesn't change my list of 'to do' things) is to thin out the dead from the bamboos.

Seed sowing and potting on is a regular occurrence and repotting plants for sale is now a major job - finding the right size pots is the annoying part. This week I sold twenty tomato plants, eleven Hebes, eight Hostas and forty five Jerusalem Sage (russeliana, not fruticosa). The charity is coming by today to pick up the money raised so far this year. :blue thumb:

By request of the boss I built two large frames, bamboo canes and string, for her Sweetpeas that needed planting out. The bending to do the lower strings means I have to have regular rests (feet up and a cuppa). I finished those yesterday morning and then she decided that she wanted two large pots of them on the patio - the others are right down by the veggies.

So two large pots had to be filled with compost and shifted to their right position. I then made a, sort of, wigwam with 8ft canes and more string. All plants now planted and all those left over are already waiting for collection by some of her gardening club friends. Everyone is happy with buying from us as they get them a lot cheaper than from the GC and they know the money is going to a good cause.

We have people popping round today for foliage and flowers for a flower arranging competition. That's Mrs Shiney's domain and expertise. :)

Yesterday I looked at one of my favourite Mahonias, and saw a new flush of leaves on one branch. Then I realised the other two branches had no flush of leaves. Closer inspection showed that theirs had been munched by molluscs.

There should be a thread for "what are we not doing in the garden" because there's very little I can write on this thread so far this year.
On it I would put 'I haven't sown any seeds yet, although I've usually done it by mid April, and I haven't weeded the garden or pressure washed the patio, and I haven't tidied the perspex shelters where I do my sowing and potting - it's all still as it would be in February.'

As for the seeds I may not bother this year because it's going to take a while to catch up with all the 'not done yet' jobs, and the date on most of the packs is 2025 or 2026 ...
And the weather doesn't look as if it's going to improve very much soon :frown:
And I'm getting old and running out of energy so everything takes longer :heehee:

Nothing outside it's raining again. So i sowed some wallflower seeds in the toilet roll tubes and put 3 seeds in each.

That's a great compliment @simone_in_wiltshire, thank you! I've found that Geums start to sprawl when the soil gets dry so I water them when there's been no rain for a few days.

It is now raining so I have done some pottering in the greenhouse - not a lot. Watered where necessary, spoken nicely to the pots holding the beans that were sown, moved the pots of Cobaea further apart as it is too early to plant out and they are getting entangled with each other (may have to start them up some sticks to keep them from groping round.

Planted a clematis sieboldii to scramble through a Continus. It’s been languishing in its pot for a week because weather has been wet. Finally a better spell coming up. Raised beds still half done as awaiting some longer planks which have been delayed. . Base for shed completed. Away for a week in Cornwall so fingers crossed daughter doesn’t swamp the greenhouse…… or forget it entirely!
