A strange organism in my compost heap

Dog's vomit slime mould! Otherwise known as scrambled egg slime mould. It loves decaying matter so I had better move it out to where a tree was cut down or it will devour all my rotting veg.

 

Surely you want it to break down your rotting veg, its just part of the process.

 

Well, I don't know. I looked it up online and they said it would see it as a feast. Perhaps I'll get a giant one that'll take over the garden!! I am loathe to get rid of it really because its so interesting. I think I'll leave it for now and see what happens.
I read the book Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake and found it fascinating. Apparently they are related to amoebae and can work out problems like the quickest route to get to food through a maze.

 

I thought it was a fungus?

 

Slime mould is fascinating, it is not a fungus, but a collection of strange organisms, well worth reading about.
