Also known as honey garlic, it's an allium hence the onion smell, and yes it's very popular with bees.

Allium siculum (Nectaroscordum siculum) (Sicilian honey garlic) is a very attractive allium which the bees love. The leaves and stems smell strongly of onion.

They were probably our best selling plant when we used to open our garden and would sell over 100 on the day. A slight word of warning that we always gave was that once established and when you have the amount you would like you should definitely remove the flower heads once they start going to seed. They are a prolific seeder and can quickly become extremely rampant. They also reproduce by offsets (by mitosis) so you may see new ones grow directly alongside the older ones.

They look lovely but keep an eye on them. They come in different shades.

Thank you @shiney, very informative. I just have 3 in a pot on the patio. At the bottom of my garden I get a lot of Ramsons (wild garlic), so I think I might plant them down there when they've finished and see which one wins!

@Escarpment that will be interesting but the Siculum, once it has established itself, is likely to pull ahead of the Ramsons as it grows a lot taller and spreads its seeds further. It will be an attractive area. :blue thumb:

Forgot to add:- when the seed heads form the flowers all move back upwards into a pyramid and when dried they look good in flower arrangements.

A marigold that had self seeded in our polytunnel but had to be replanted outside because of works.
