What are we doing in the garden 2024

Took the squash round to the allotment greenhouses this morning, did a bit of watering, dispatched some slugs to the compost heap, resowed parsnips that hadn't come up. Nice and warm in the sun even before 8am

 

Un-flippin'-believable! My newest osteospermum is being attacked by slugs. I've grown them for yrs and never had one munched. Seriously fed up with the little beggars.

 

When my daughter moved into her house she found a cross of ash on the lawn which she assumed were the ashes of the old gentleman who had owned the house. She wan't phased and just let the rain wash the ash into the lawn. From the shrubs growing in the garden he had been a keen gardener and my daughter quite liked the idea he was still around, keeping an eye on it.
My mother put the ashes of my step father around the roses in their garden to no detrimental effect. I think a lot of people do this quietly and plants do not seem to be adversely affected.

• It’s when you find out the previous owners have buried their dog/cat somewhere that it gets a bit tricky….. how deep did they go? was it under the apple tree? Etc etc

 

Our cat is buried in the middle of the lawn about 2 ft down. I always have a few words with her when I mow the lawn. We will put a large bird bath on top. RIP pussy.

 

Had a busy day doing non gardening things but found time to do some watering and then just sitting and enjoying the peace in the area next to the summerhouse. Love it-its been worth all the effort.

 

Watering system set for manual for the beans, garlic (if needed) and potato's which are chits cut off SM pots by the OH There was a rolling of eyes (sorry) from me when this was done last year, and some embarrassment when super pots were produced...

 

Glad you're getting the chance to enjoy the fruits of your labours @Snorky85 . Definitely makes it worthwhile.
Not sure what I'll be doing today as it's to be very hot again, so I might be indoors for a good bit of the day. There's repairs to be done to various bits and bobs, and some edging stones to be mortared into place round bits of the pond, so I might do that. Grass needs cutting, and I couldn't be bothered doing it when I got home yesterday. It's grown like mad because of the weather in the last few days. Good material for the compost bin though.

 

Must have spent 2 hours wrestling with shelving for my small greenhouse. Never have I dropped so many nuts and bolts! Or sworn so much. Finally had to get some help from OH who is champion meccano fan. Oh the shame of it. Then discovered I’d been sent 3 cantilever brackets instead of 4 and 3 identical shelf supports instead of 2 mirror image ones. Elite have had a polite email from me requesting immediate action. We’ll see what happens. As it took 2 months for original delivery I’m not holding my breath.
On lighter note all my plants and pots have survived daughter’s ministrations while I’ve been in Cornwall (apart from parsley seedlings which I won’t mention to her). Main thing is tomatoes look great. and today is finish the raised bed day!

 

I went around my hostas and dahlias in pots with slug pellets. Potted on 3 loofah seedlings, moved some more seedlings into the greenhouse, planted out half a dozen sweetcorn. Found some new flower buds on the stem of one of my orchids, just in time as I was contemplating cutting off the "dead" stem. Started clearing a patch to plant out the broad beans, they are still in miniscule pots in the greenhouse and one has flowers on it
Made a loaf of bread (using a bread maker so nothing to do with me!) and some sausage rolls.

 

Yesterday I pulled up Spanish Bluebells (aka slug city) - I’ve given up trying to dig out the bulbs - so they are allowed an area under the apple tree and the blooms look pretty in April then they are culled. I’ve mulched over where they were, with Foxgloves on the verge of blooming as the succession plant.

I have potted-on courgettes and pinched-out sweet peas (not sure whether to plant out or wait until after the rain forecast for next week to minimise slug invasion - also I need to buy some cheap marigolds as decoys for the sweet peas and some in with the tomatoes).

 

Faced with the same dilemma. Resolved to a pre-emptive strike with slug pellets, just in case they work when they are the only dish on offer.

 

So pleased to discover that the Salvia Amistad I thought had popped its clogs has just started to sprout ....
