@cactus_girl we also have tatty fronds but we leave them as they give some protection in the winter as they hang down over the trunk. However you can cut these off and allow the full trunk to be shown. It is a lovely plant and hopefully you can keep it.

 

@On the Levels I think I want to keep it - they do look lovely when flowering. Still can't upload a photo - there is no option to select thumbnail or full image?

 

Try to put off cutting it down for now, then when we get a spot of very hot weather point out that shading the front room is actually a reason for keeping it ...

I've got a south facing front room with nothing shading it, one summer I painted the windows with greenhouse shade paint! I don't think it made a lot of difference to temperature but the reduced glare made it feel better. Garden is too small to plant a decent sized tree.

 

Good idea @Escarpment. Actually it does shade the car - the sun on the car really works hubby up, so I'll get that into the conversation later - it's full sun today.

Wow, that is a magnificent tree you have there @cactus_girl! One that size would be worth around £1,000 which might sway your hubby! Just removing all the lower yellowing leaves will make a big difference to its appearance and reduce shading. I had one in my previous garden but have had no success growing one here so it's tall grasses instead!

A few years ago hubby chopped off the new emerging leaves! So there is a missing year of growth.

He says he is in no rush as he wants to wait for the one we bought to get larger- it's about waist height in the pot. I am just about to repot it into a larger pot. So not panicking just yet.

 

I’m not sure it could be moved successfully @cactus_girl. Have a look at some of the specialist palm sellers on line and you’ll see the range of prices.

 

You might get a palm enthusiast interested and they would come out and dig it out for free, but Trachys are quite common these days.
Trachys do move quite well, I think, if you know what you are doing and pick the right time.

 

@Plantminded and @pete thank you for thinking about my tree. Hubby would get our usual tree surgeon out and possibly a stump man too, but hadn't thought anyone would seriously be able to dig it up! I will research this, but hubby has just said he's not in a rush, but said he may take some leaves off the top! They're the best ones...

 

I visited a nursery that I pass on my way home from work yesterday. Was browsing around when I noticed these peonies reduced from £16 to £8 each.

It turns out the plantsman that runs the place had taken cuttings from 2 different plants last year and had the small plants on display in the autumn. A mother and her child had come in and the child picked off the labels from all the peonies and handed them to his mother. She thought it was funny. The plantsman didn’t.

Anyway, they could be pink or they could be yellow with a hint of pink. I’m not fussed

I'd remove the lower ones if you want to cut it back, helps with headroom as well as looking more natural.
