@pete the tree also helps with screening us from the house opposite, and that is my main concern. Hubby wants to be able to see the sky, which chopping off the top achieves, but ruins the tree of course. Before we had a great white cherry (too big) and before that the builders had put in a St Paul's scarlet hawthorne, which when pruned carefully achieved both objectives, but it died. Today hubby is putting in the Stranvaesia, so that will keep him quiet!

And will affect its potential value if you decide to remove it and sell it @cactus_girl!

@Plantminded I know, I know! But men can't be told! I have just been looking at a website called Big Plant Nursery, where they grow some in the ground, in clay soil like here. The other large ones they sell are in very small pots, or maybe they have dug them up for sale. Their leaves are not tatty like ours, which gets too much wind. I presume their trunk measurements are height. I expect they have special equipment for digging them out of the ground. But it's very interesting and something I will drop into the conversation! Weather is not too good today so I expect hubby will not venture out.

I should really be on your husband's side @cactus_girl, but when it comes to plants I'll take their side:)! I've bought plants from the Big Plant Nursery in the past, mainly bamboos, they were all good quality and are thriving well.

I have quite a big trachelospermum, @cactus_girl, but I've read that you shouldn't cut off the top leaves because that can kill it. I cut off the bottom ones when then get yellow and tatty.

Just been to the big plant nursery. The website said it was open today, bank holiday. the GCs are shut.

I bought an Alstroemeria "Summer Breeze" which is yellow with peachy tones and dark leaves; 3 dahlias with loads of buds and the odd flower, a red, a purple and a yellow; a Lantana, 3 pink Sunpatiens (Busy Lizzie, but bigger), 6 tomatoes, Ananas, Roma, Cocktail, Fandango, Noire de Crimée and Lemon Boy; a red sweet pepper and a yellow one; a round courgette and a pale green one; 2 Cucumbers - all for 50€. I thought that was pretty good value.

I've had expensive weekend :thud: .

Had a few plants turn up today off farmer gracy that I forgot about - 3x sedum xenox orange - 5x acontium arsendii ( dunno where they are going :noidea: £3.50 though how could I not buy them ) persicaria alba - hosta t rex - caladium something and a colocasia black magic .

Popped to a little nursery I visit now again 50mile round trip this weekend , seen as my salvia carrodonna look bad / dead and trying a different variety so got 2x salvia lubecca and looks like a persicaria affinis superba which I've just realised this not the variety I were after  .

Pop to the GC on the way back home and got way to carried away , they had one of each Aralia elata variegata and aureomarginata , went with Aralia variegata its been on my wish list for a while now I've never seen it in person .
                  DSC_0978.JPG
And while I were there I got these two massive terracotta pots to go ether side of the front door £££ :rolleyespink:. So now I am skint I see a salvia dombeyi I'd like and Chelsea is on which is causing more temptation

Daphne 'Royal Crown' ... not really keen on the name but it's a pretty plant and can be grown in a pot.
It has red berries after the flowers.
I bought it in B&M Bargains

@Perki oh dear! I used to hanker after that aralia too - but they were always too expensive. And as @Busy-Lizzie says, the pots are gorgeous
@Michael Hewett oh dear, why did you mention that was from BM bargains? I'll probably accidentally pop down there now. There's always room for a Daphne...

I’ve stopped at a nursery after my job interview today (stressful time changing jobs). The clematis is Triomphe, nepeta Kitten Around, verbascum Honey Dijon and another silene Valley High (I already have two of them).

Another "ooh I haven't seen one of those before, I must have it" moments whilst shopping for compost. Westringia "wynyabbie". An Australian plant and apparently good for windy coastal spots. Evergreen too, described as a lavender/ rosemary plant. It will have to go in a pot if I can find one.... 20240521_190402.jpg
