Hello Busy-Lizzie, I am surprised that people had problems with TCL. Apart from the cuttings that I brought over when we moved, I got all my roses from them without any errors. I was especially impressed with the price of the DA ones! I did wonder whether they're non-grafted and that's why they're cheaper, but frankly, that would be an advantage here, as a lot of shrubs, including roses, tend to sucker horribly when they're stressed in the summer.

 

One should be a little cautious with TCL, they are cheap for a reason.. a number of their roses are imported from Serbia, and grafted onto various rootstocks. How well they do can depend on how well they were grafted, some may do better in your soils than others. They use Laxa [common in UK/Western Europe].. Pollmeriana, Multiflora [prefers acid soil], and Schmidt's Ideal [extra hardy for Eastern Europe].. you wouldn't know which one you're getting and neither do they.

There is also a risk you might get a rose infected with Rose Mosaic Virus, I had one from them with this.

I only know because I enquired and this is what I was told by their Proprietor.

Still, it's worth it if you are able to import without too much hassle.

 

@Busy-Lizzie and @noisette47 Lens is a really good Belgian rose grower and supplier but they didn't have a stand at my favourite, almost local plant fair at Aywiers in the spring so I bought a lot of my roses from Daniel Schmidt who did - Home - Les Roses de Daniel I would peruse their catalogue and order roses for collection at Aywiers as his nursery was a long way down in the Ardennes.

I could buy DA roses from him more cheaply than from DA. He would buy in bare root DA roses, presumably at trade prices, and then pot them up and sell them as healthy plants at the various plant fairs and in his nurseries. I brought a cutting with me of his Breathless Charm which is a cross of DA's Graham Thomas and one of his own.

 

I like roses by Lens of Belgium, we can get some over here..
This is 'Comtesse Andre d'Oultremont', which I suspect is a seedling of the better known, large growing, hybrid musk rose 'Penelope', but a much smaller form of that rose, suitable for tiny gardens.

 

You are a dangerous woman@Mrs Hillard!! I shall have to add that to my wishlist and, no doubt, others to spread the cost of P&P.

 

I'd get rid of your La Traviata @Obelix-Vendée, you don't sound too thrilled with it and it has had a few years to get established and do well. I'm not a fan of those roses which have a tendency to 'ball', I think they look horrible. If she enquiries, just tell your SIL it unfortunately died due to the recent bad weather and you have already got a replacement!

 

@lizzie27 SIL will be watching from heaven, if there is such a place, and I doubt BIL will visit again or remember the rose. It's certainly not one I'd have chosen - too thorny and no perfume.

 

I once read advice to gently peel away the outer petals of any balled roses to help it open? I haven’t tried it myself.

My roses seem later blooming than lots of your roses despite living in South Devon but they are starting, here’s a few.

Desdemona, I absolutely love the colour of the rose when it just opens and the smell is gorgeous.


You’re Beautiful has started to flower and will carry on longer than any of my others, it never gets black spot and is definitely my healthiest rose.


I’m growing Malvern Hills up through an apple tree and a boring evergreen tree, it’s grown well over 10 foot in the last year and has loads of buds. The flowers are so dainty.

I seem to have a problem with my Roald Dahl rose … it only has one rosebud on it. It is next to a Desdemona so both are getting the same amount of sun, they are both in pots and are watered with the same amount. Is it rose blindness and does anyone know what to do about it. It’s the second year I’ve had it and it was fine last year?
