Thanks folks, really wasn't looking forward to it. OK for now, fingers crossed for future.

 

Croatia was lovely despite my health problems, I will post some photos later once I get them onto the pc. The journey home was not one I would want to repeat anytime soon though. Up at 5am for first ferry to Split, flight then drive home from Gatwick before going on to A&E in Guildford at 5 pm. A&E were concerned that my kidneys were only functioning at about 50% so kept me in for a couple of days. There will be surgery to come later this summer.

On a more cheerful note the deer is still in the garden, lying up by the veg plot at the moment. It seems to be a late birth as we usually see the new kids by the middle of May.

I must check the greenhouse to see if my watering system has worked. There might even be a strawberry or two to be had.

 

Friday. a nice chilly day.
Some garden work on my list, baking banana bread later waiting for a stick of butter to thaw/soften. Perhaps go to a local gathering of live music, food truck and beer, just need lawn chairs, starts at 7PM.

Whilst out at the hospital yesterday, I had a phone call at home, and consequently my dear wife has agreed to various dates when I can volunteer at the local museum.
I do like an efficient secretary!!

 

Afternoon all, another dry, sunny and breezy day here. Had a mad dash round this morning as I found my usual route over to B&Q in Bristol was shut, so had to go the long way round - along with several hundred other people it seemed. Never met so many hazards, roadworks, badly parked cars, horribly raised new speed humps, tractors, refuse lorries, oh and Jacob Rees Mogg
busy canvassing. Bought the Postcrete and screws and got a refund for a newish shower caddy that had already gone rusty (I was amazed I'd actually kept the receipt/guarantee!). Called into Aldi to check for any bargains in their central isles - not and a GC for more H.Grit. Finally arrived back home for a very welcome late lunch and a luscious apple Danish pastry.

@steephill, glad you're safely back from Croatia, sorry about your health problems, not what you want on holiday so hope you get sorted soon.

@RowlandsCastle I hope you are also getting sorted at the hospital and that your very efficient wife hasn't double booked you!

We're TV less at the moment as we think our 16 year old satellite dish has gone on the blink so we've had our moneys worth from it. Chap was supposed to call today but hasn't arrived - why are we not surprised? Looks like a quiet weekend then, it's a good job we have hundreds of books in the house. Anyway I'm looking forward to my son coming to stay overnight, he's got a ticket to watch Bath rugby at home tomorrow.

@lizzie27, Bath play Sale Sharks tomorrow. I used to go and watch Sale when my nephew played for them. Love a good game of rugby. Hope that you get your TV sorted out soon but you are right about the inconsistencies whenever a technical engineer is needed! I am signing out for tonight - looking forward to Beechgrove and GW. I’ve had a busy day and WonkyW now has a new (to her) and hopefully more reliable car (Volvo C30).

Her much loved previous car Doris (an Alfa 147 named for Doris Day aka Calamity Jane) was becoming expensive to keep on the road as it was always a pretty rare car and now parts are becoming scarce/pricey.

Son helped with the choosing, organising and checking over on delivery, plus the sale of Doris to an excited apprentice mechanic at the repair shop near his workplace … it’s going to be his ‘project’ and apparently already has a ‘big bore kit’ ordered for it

The heavens were tipping down on the drive down there but thankfully cleared up a bit when I got there. However thinking of when son and I got stuck down there last autumn because of the floods. I did take an overnight bag , just in case! Thankfully not needed.

OH and I have had a very good Chinese takeaway delivered. Just the ticket.

Cloudy outside, it has rained a little. Yesterday was a perfect gardening day. We went to the market in the morning. OH bought me a lightweight handbag for when we go on outings. My usual leather one is very heavy and it doesn't help that I use it as a store cupboard.

I did over 3 hours of tidying up of flower beds, but probably overdid it as my poorly knee was protesting in the night. I took a couple of OH's strong pain killers, he doesn't need them anymore and knee is a bit better now but I don't think I can kneel to weed.

@Busy-Lizzie I find a handbag/shoulderbag gives me a sore neck on longer days out so I use a ‘bumbag’ for my phone, small purse etc’. Anything else we need goes in OH’s light backpack.

 

Good morning all. Trouble with the van means I have an unexpected free day in the garden. Anyone grown biennial plants before? I have wallflowers and foxgloves in my seed Tin neglected and forgotten so thought I would give it a try. Also space in my tiny unheated greenhouse. Any tips?

 

With foxgloves and honesty I just scatter the seeds outside where I want them then thin out the plants or move them. I don't have a greenhouse anymore.

 

Morning everyone, much brighter but still very windy here. I need to get on with some pruning but I don't think I will be going up the ladder in these conditions. Need to get to plots to try to find out what has happened to some of my early spuds, as discussed on another thread I think the slugs and snails have taken off all the tops before they emerged. Never happened before. Oh the joy of gardening.

 

My experience of biennials is that the self sown are great, particularly you don’t have to actually do anything but if you do seed trays/pots of things you sow yourself then it seems like a loooooong wait!
The info on foxgloves, for example, says sow about now and they should flower next year, but the last few times I have done this they took the full 2 years. Maybe there’s a cut-off point that if they not established plants by Autumn then they will be ‘year one’ the next Summer , so won’t be flowering until the next.
