@ViewAhead, @pete - if the powers that be can manage to band homes for rateable value it can surely be done for power consumption.

It would be an incentive to improve insulation and energy eggiciency and invest in some thermal underwear for winter. @shiney I'm sure people who garden can find solar powered solutions to heating propagators, just as they can for outdoor lighting and pond pumps.

Little solar power units wouldn't power our propagators sufficiently during the day let alone at night when the power is most needed. It would be easier to stop raising money for charity!

We've had cavity and loft insulation for years and how do you know whether I wear underwear? :heehee:

Of course, we could go on a course on how to hibernate. :rolleyespink:

I agree. The increased standing charge is an arbitrary figure to try and get around price caps.

Another bugbear as far as I'm concerned! Rateable values were originally based on the size, value and situation of properties but are not now necessarily equitable as they are generally set on areas and not individual properties - and Council Tax is based on that figure.

In England the Council Tax is based on the last revaluation of property done on April 1st 1991 :yikes:. There are only 12 properties where we are and all of them were originally two bedroom bungalows. Some are now six bedroom houses! We are only a three bedroom bungalow now. We all pay the same Council Tax based on the value of the large properties and when we appealed against it they said they don't (can't be bothered) to decide on individual properties. :wallbanging:

So, for us, the Poll Tax would have worked out much better. Before it all blows up :hate-shocked: - I'm not advocating they bring in the Poll Tax :nonofinger:. I just think the Council Tax system needs revamping.

How domestic properties are assessed for Council Tax bands

I was quite happy with the so called poll tax.
As with all things, if you bring in something new and they all jump on the bandwagon and try to get more money coming in it won't be liked, but I think the principle was good.

Agreed. The whole Council Tax system needs a complete overhaul ... but it won't happen as the wealthy have a very good deal currently. :gaah:

Do you know, I think in these so called modern days people shouldn't have to sit around in thermal underwear and coats etc. Just to keep warm.
I don't remember having to do that in the winter of 63 with ice on the inside of the windows, but we always had enough coke and coal to sit in a warm room.

We appear to be going backwards, in order to achieve that stupid net zero they keep prattling on about.

I wish they would prattle a bit more about stupid net zero, then I might vote for them.

True, with these energy companies and government trying to extract even more from us, who can you trust.

Bit like the fuel escalator, duty increased each year by so many points above inflation with VED being scrapped. Those that drove the least paid more at the pump, yet some of that was offset in not having to pay VED. It did not take long for the labour party to retain VED plus increase the duty, which triggered the fuel protests. To think in March 1989 fuel duty on diesel was 17.29p and by March 1999 it was 50.21p with VED being retained in 1997.

@pete I suggested thermal undies as a way of keeping warm safely and without added fuel costs and given the number of people - ex-pats not locals - I knew in Belgium who swanned around in over-heated homes wearing clothing utterly unsuited to the season, it would seem a sensible way to reduce emissions.

I don't see why there can't be regular reviews of housing values based on their living space and maybe rentable, rather than sales value, altho I do think the poll tax is a fairer system with each adult being expected to contribute to funding local services. That may concentrate a few minds on litter and refuse collection, street cleaning and so on and leave more for care services altho the whole care system needs a complete overhaul.

Sometimes it's hard to see where to start to make things right but it's always good to look at the way others do it better and adopt what works.

The standing charge is meant to be for the maintenance/upgrading of the systems, but in reality, it's an easy way for them to claw back all the debt - especially from the companies they take over that have gone down the pan, because the regulators don't seem to be capable of doing their jobs properly either.
The utility company Bulb is a classic example. There were still ads on TV for them - looking for new custom, when a few days later they were bust. How is that acceptable at all?

Just watching the silaging going on near by, a big forager and looks like they found some metal in the grass as the pickup/header keeped stoping and going into rev/backwards to spit out the grass, wasn't clearing so a tractor driver was there to clear grass away, well the forager was still working but pickup stopped and tractor driver very close, he was trusting the forager driver and mechanical things when he was pulling grass out of the front of the forager :yikes: as the stopped pickup is controled by a switch/button and driver finger there is not much saftey there if it's start's up! i was tault to swicth off the mechine and stop engine none of this happen, i can see why there is a high dead rate in Agri you would get another chance
