What are we doing in the garden 2024

The wind was really quite cold and strong all day.
Managed to get some washing dry.
Did a couple of hours outside, planting out the last few sweetcorn and the leeks. I also cleared some more pathway and a small bed ready for some annual herbs.
Found the brand new artichoke plant and the three loofah seedlings chewed down to stumps. Grrrhhh
Every joint in my body is now sore and stiff. Must walk the dog, very slowly, before it gets too hot

 

I had a really productive day in the garden yesterday.
Hub has made new hanging brackets from wood offcuts, so the strawbs can be hung out of reach of dogs, but where they can be watered and harvested easily.
Nearly all my annuals are planted now.
I gave away the last 2 golden toms I deemed 'spare', leaving me with 10 of varying colours. I tell myself that's enough!
Today, I will be planting courgettes, potting on my last cucumber, some peppers and finishing the annuals.
One blot on the landscape; doolally old dog (she's 15) pulled up and ate 5 runners. They hadn't quite begun climbing, so she found their waving stems, and that was it. I've resown them and put a trellis panel in front, so hopefully, no repeat.

Been out and weeded the veg plot, three rows of peas have been eaten by a combination of pigeons and molluscs. I have some French and runner beans surviving will need to sow more though.
A lot of perennials are late emerging from the ground this year and struggling with molluscs once above ground, hopefully the warm dry weather will encourage the plants and discourage the molluscs.

 

Lovely weather today, wind dropped a bit. Cleared out most of forget-me-nots, left a couple to seed, must get my poor cosmos in before they get further pot bound. Planted out three tomatoes into 5litre pots on top of a growbag outside. Red cherry, Tigerella and Sungold. Helped OH finish off shed (hooks, tool racks etc.). Dahlias planted out yesterday inside copper rings seem to have survived so far. Spotted a song thrush in yesterday so hope he finds the snails and also came across a large slow worm. So there is some hope.

 

I’ve been out to a charity open garden event so I’ve potted up my purchases of a scented pelargonium, Oxalis, and a cherry tomato.

I’ve also had a tidy of the spent forget-me-nots and a few wayward Alchemilla and weeds from my ‘beach’ area.

 

Finished off installing a 'brace' post for a rotten rose arch upright with the help of a bag of Postcrete, so easy to use. Now hardening off nicely as it didn't rain. Pleased with my efforts.
Then I planted out 3 pots of left over tulips, 2 pots worth in the 'orchard' under the long grass and the third in one of the top terrace beds where, hopefully, I will be able see them from the bedroom window next year.

 

We have sat out on the patio for the first time this year. Chilly, but I was swathed in an M & S throw.

Nothing today i went to see my friends.

 

Just back from my Dublin trip. Happy to find that the first strawberries are turning red, and that the resident blackbirds don't seem to have noticed yet. Got the bed netted this afternoon, and watered a lot of things which need planting out ASAP. Also mowed the paths through the "meadow", which has become a bit more fiddly since the new mower we had to buy recently, though just an updated version of our previous one, has a bigger grass box, making it rather unwieldy in tight spaces.

 

Started to weed an area and then felt an irritant on my face. Thought nothing and then it seemed more. Went indoors and found the lower part of my face was swollen. Washed and washed and washed. Over the hours the inflammation went down but no idea what it was that had sprayed onto my face.

 

What a PITA @Loofah . They really decimate areas so quickly don't they?
Venison casserole is lovely though....
Won't be doing much today as I have other plans at daughter's new flat. Grass needs edges done, as I didn't get around to that the other day when I cut the grass. Maybe a bit of deadheading if I have time.
I did a lot of 'putting plants in moats' yesterday. Totally scunnered with it. The new bare root siberian Irises are all being eaten, so they were added to the list of plants needing attention.
I need a swimming pool to fit everything in to give them protection.

 

I potted on 2 tomato plants and a couple of 'mouse melon' plants. Did some more path stripping. Took delivery of 2 hostas from Edrom Nursery. Wonderful packaging and plants, really pleased with them. The plants showed no sign of having been in transit. Top marks.

 

It has been good gardening weather the last few days but I have a flare up of tendonitis in my knee. I ignored it on Thursday and Friday as there was a lot to do in the garden. Over 3 hours in the veg garden on Thursday and same again in the flower garden on Friday. Yesterday I only pruned the lilac as it had got too tall with all the flowers on top. My knee was very painful.

OH was great yesterday. He did mowing and strimming and edged all the beds that I hadn't yet done.

I still have 3 dahlias, 1 lantana and the runner beans to plant. I wanted the garden to look nice as the garden club vegetable group are coming to tea on Tuesday. The president of the club is coming too and he's also the organiser of this area for the French version of the NGS.
