What a shame!
A good rule of thumb when removing leaves...only remove leaves from below where the fruit is ripening.

Why? a) to improve air circulation & b) so the plants concentrate their energy on producing fruit, rather than leaves.

 

Perhaps you could suggest [for next year] that tomatoes aren't worth growing @mazambo as the crops are so poor....
I feel for you. There's nothing worse than being in a situation where someone thinks they know everything about a particular subject. I doubt there's anything you can do to change the attitude.
Could you rally the other troops and have an intervention?

Showing him this thread might be an idea, but when people are totally convinced they're right, it's very very difficult to alter their mindset.

 

He sounds like a right PITA to work with, I'm sure you have tried to have a discussion with him over this but I just wonder what other plants he feels this is the way forward.

If not why not.

 

A very big PITA, i can honestly say I've never seen anyone garden like him. I've already told him next year we'll be working to a plan throughout the garden, and I can guarantee he won't touching the tomatoes again

 

We have one of these at our Allotments, thinks he knows everything, but even he isn't that daft. Perhaps we could put them both in a locked room with secateurs in hand and leave them to it.

@Stephen Southwest This is how someone believes you grow tomatoes.

 

Frustrating! I hope you find a successful way to keep him off them next year.

 

Just a suggestion @mazambo. How about suggesting as an experiment he can be IC some of the tomatoes and do his usual slaughter job on them and you volunteer to look after the others and see which produce the best then he cannot argue with the results if growing the same variety in the same location. There is nothing worse than flaming know it alls. Had a couple during the spring when my plant sale was on. “ oh Monty Don this and Monty Don that” regarding whether to grow Rhododendron and Azaleas in full sun. I said he no doubt knows vastly more than I do but I know my garden better than him and mine flower best in full sun being in Scotland. They did not agree until I happened to suggest we went and had a look at my many Rhodendron and Azaleas like the one below as an example….”proof of the pudding” and all that!

Vains on the leaves are raised and wriggly

Giving tomato feed every 10 days since flowers have developed
