Brugmansia

As I now have Five Brugmansia, I decided to start a thread on them as hopefully they should all bloom this year.

B ' Charles Grimaldi' is now 18 years old and in the ground on the Dining Patio. I bought him as this and with first bloom ...


... he turned into this (blooms best in the Winter) ...


I have a B sauveolens in Pink, bought c 2007/8 ...


which I lost but this is her daughter about to bloom ....



I will add the others in time.

 

Last evening ...

The B suaveolens Pink above is the right hand one of these two ...


The left hand one is supposedly this ...


The one in the middle by the water feature is this unknown as I did it from seed ...


I have a lovely variegated with unknown colour bloom ...

(I underplant larger pots, often Balsam)

So now I wait (im)patiently.

they are huge I have grown Brugs .aka Angels Trumpets many times . but being the uk even in the greenhouse and wrapped up with fleece and kept frost free over winter always fail with me plus the size of them come the end of summer , they are greedy feeders and lots of water and you do need a huge space to grow them properly even in a pot ...

we should have a Mediterranean thread ....

Hi Spruce, nice to see you visit. What do you mean from the above?

I just put stuff in Tropical or individual titles are there are not many who grow Med things in the UK. Also I have my own thread of An Algarve Garden.

We have five brugmansia now but three are from the same mother plant that's a bit of a memorial to an old friend that past. They do quite well here and we can get a couple of dozen flowers at once if we are luckily but it's usually a little less than that.

The three that are the same we thought were charles grimaldi but looking at your first picture I'm now not so sure. They start out a deep orangey/yellow and fade to white after a few days but I don't remember seeing such an intense contrast with the white patches on the yellow.
We also have what you have pictured on the label, brugmansia sanguinea, it was only a plug plant last year but growing strongly.

I have several "memorial" plants.

My 'Charles Grimaldi' starts yellow and goes orangy as the flowers fade and is very heavily scented. It is luck it was not as pictured (bought from Aldi I believe), as it is too hot here for B sanguinea and obviously ideal for Charlie.

May I ask your location please as you don't mention.

Would love to see yours when they bloom.

 

Hi Victoria, I'm in norwich so not the best place for tropical plants but we have a glorified lean to that protects them quite well in the winter.

I will post some pictures when they are blooming but from your description it does sound like we have charles, the scent is extremely potent when it's out and far stronger than on our pink flowering one.

 

Hi again. I have had to make a correction in my original post ... the Pink one is b suaveolens NOT sanguinea which, of course, is the one I cannot grow outside here.

The Pink ones are not scented here so perhaps yours is the B suaveolens too.

I would gladly give up some of this never-ending sun/heat for some rain.

 

I only have one miserable specimen left, its not cared for and I'm not sure I want it, after spending all summer feeding and watering they often come into their own around September and look amazing in October just in time to get slammed by an autumn storm.

 

You say that, but you moved for a reason, and it wasn't because you wanted wind and rain and frost.
