Tomato Growing 2024

Excellent logic...of course this is the logic used by those knowledgeable Victorian gardeners, in their walled gardens.
The theory being that the walls absorb the heat during the day & release it at night (rather the same principle as storage heaters).
Of course they grew such exotics as peaches etc, using this principle.

 

Not done it in a green house, but certainly did outside. As @JWK has said I kept it away from the plants. I grew the toms in a classic wigwam with 16 plants to a row and put the cuttings between rows and in the middle of the wigwam. Between rows was mainly to keep down weeds, this was a bit tricky if it rained and the grass decomposed as I found it like an ice rink!

 

Ahh yes, in the UK that could well be a problem, but then again they may stick to eating the grass cuttings. To be honest we stopped putting the cuttings down by May/June as before then there was a great deal of clover being cut. Later than that there were consequences i.e. weeds arrived.

 

I've been using grass clippings as a mulch for the past two years and it's been a success for me. My tomatoes go outside and the soil is very sandy so I wanted add some organic matter to the soil as well as suppress weeds and keep in moisture.

I'd recommend trying it. Even outside, the clippings form a dry mat, it isn't slimy. Haven't had any issues with slugs.

Hoping my tomatoes were ok in the greenhouse last night. I forgot close the greenhouse door when I went to the allotment yesterday

 

Yeah, bad news for squash, beans, peppers, toms, tomatilos, aubergines and melons. Really windy and wet here too so that makes it worse

 

I have been lucky; weather hasn't been too bad here in West Yorkshire. No high winds -at least where I live, so I pulled out the awing in case it rained and protected my tomatoes and cucumber against any icy winds that might occur later that evening with a length of fleece wrapped around 4 wrought iron patio chairs as a wind break.

I didn't close the doors to the greenhouse, either. Got down to 8.4 in there.
My toms are very slow this year. I usually have a Bloody butcher or Brandywine ripening by now, but I haven't even got any tomatoes forming yet. (Growing Happy Day and Black cherry this year in the greenhouse)
