Fabulous photos, everyone. A pity the fragrance can't be transmitted electronically.

Could it be that the wet weather has meant the blooms are larger, and therefore heavier, than usual or did it do the same last yr?

 

@ViewAhead, it is true the blooms are bigger than last year but I do believe she still drooped a bit even then. Some of my other roses have huge blooms this year also, but they manage to keep their heads up.

 

I'm not sure what you can do as supporting each flower head is not an option.

By the way, we have the same arch. I did put trellis over the top of mine to help with tying in.

 

Yes. I agree. Sorry I wasn't thinking! but I have two more photos now and not sure that they are much better. However, I did say to my friend that I would try to find out what this rose is (if possible). Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for the pics. It's a spinosissima type rose, which is a wild specie type that has several selections. The most popular is one called 'Stanwell Perpetual', however this has larger flowers than yours.
The one in the picture looks more like R. spinosissima 'Andrewsii'.. here's a pic of a typical small bloom on this rose..

That's lovely little rose @daisym - and a quick reply from one of the rose experts on here.

I would be grateful please if you could clear up a puzzle for me @Mrs Hillard. A year or two ago, I stuck a rose pruning by the side of my 'Blue for You' rose which took nicely and produced one blue flower identical to the original rose beside it. I moved the smaller one in the Spring to the other end of the same bed and it has now flowered again but this flower is completely white. Am I right thinking that one of BfY's parents might be a white rose or is this just a mutation? I'm curious!

 

I have just chased a roe deer out of my garden! I was sure a deer had been eating my yellow roses and this morning, when I looked out of the kitchen window, there it was eating my Cornelia. That must be why the lower half of her is so straggly.

I suspect that may be due to weather Lizzie, early blooms on roses can often be untypical, and 'Blue For You' does have some white in it. I expect it will revert to normal colour later on, but if it doesn't, perhaps post a photo so we can see what's going on.

 

My Meilland rose "Friendly Red" was pink last year when I bought it. It's red now. I'm glad I didn't complain!

Just to complete this tale. I have heard back from my friend, who was delighted with your identification, and am copying part of her email which I think others may be interested in.

'The information in his article all fits with my knowledge of the lady in whose garden I found the plant from which I took the cutting. She was a long-time friend of my parents, and had an almost obsessional interest in all things Jacobite. When she died, (without children or known blood relatives) lawyers found she had a number of Jacobite items - wine glasses, pictures, books, etc. Experts from the museum in Edinburgh were called in to look at some of the items, and I think several ended up in collections there. It makes sense that her garden, too, would have included plants with strong Scottish associations.'

The article was written by a Peter Boyd (peterboyd.com) and she was able to identify her rose as 'Falkland'.
