Yes - the big motivation in funding the trials has been balancing the grid.
It looks like it's just one car that's currently compatible with the Quasar 2 CCS

Well not strictly true. I have solar panels that add very little to my supply, which is serviced annually. If I had an electric car sulking my electric, I would most definitely be paying a lot for it. You need a huge amount of panels to benefit from them.

@AcerObsessed I'm surprised you get very little out of them but, as you say, it depends on how many you have. I have sixteen and do fairly well with them. I never have mine serviced as I don't think they really need it. They just sit there and do their thing! :noidea:

After ten years I have just had to replace the Inverter but, otherwise, nothing.

Of course, as you say, what you use for charging the car will stop you using it for something else.

Think I have an average amount giving 4kWh if the sun is shining. They generate about half of what we use annually so a great benefit for us anyway.

It's certainly true in the case of the kids who have x2 electric cars. Not too sure if the array of solar is not large mind you, but there does seem to be a lot of panels. They tend to charge (not sure how well automated this is) on electric that would otherwise go to the grid. From what they have said their aim is for that to happen as little as possible as they get a paltry return.

Indeed. I spoke to the Service guy last year and the issue is that solar panels don't save anything. So they are only useful in full sun, during the day. I have 7 panels on my house as it can't fit anymore, but the difference in before and after is only about 14p a week, in the summer. In winter, forget it lol and even then, we don't have full sun every day during the summer. It also costs electric to run the system, so you need to have a lot of panels to make it worthwhile.
If I had an electric car plugged in, it would cost me a fortune lol

I see the market share for BEV's in Ireland has dropped to 13% which is back to the level of 2022.

Ireland new car registrations May 2024 - car and motoring news by CompleteCar.ie

I think these tariffs that the French and the States are imposing on BEV's made in the far east is not helping, I think it sends out the wrong message. They have gone on and on about switching to fully electric vehicles will help to dramatically cut C02, well if that's the case, there should be zero tariffs.

I guess you must have a different type of solar panel from ours. :noidea: Even last month we produced 450 kWh of electricity with our 16 panels. So your seven should be producing getting on for 200 kWh.

I know that I don't produce as much as I did when I was younger but don't think that really applies to solar panels :old: :heehee:

Surely the aspect of the panels make a big difference and if you can get 2 different aspects they must be more efficient.
Something like a terraced house or gable roofed one will often not be well situated whereas a hipped roof will give you that extra opportunity in many cases.

Certainly orientation of the panels makes a difference.

My panels face South so are supposed to be in the best orientation. My cousin has half facing East and Half facing West and his annual power production is not much less than mine. At this time of the year his panels are producing power 2.5 hours before mine as the sun rises in the North East and didn't creep round to my panels until around 7 a.m. He has a similar thing in the evening with his West facing panels. In the middle of the day mine produce a lot more than his.

...one complexity of solar panel orientation is that west facing panels will generate electricity into the late afternoon/evening when demand is greater, and therefore payback/kWh can be higher. We have south facing panels here - if I was going to add anything in, it would be west facing panels...
The max output in the middle of the day is also usually limited by the inverter, so there can be good reasons to go for the 'shoulder' generation of East-West arrays.

"The inverter", what does that do and if it limits the output from the panels can you not get one that doesn't limit the output.

I think the simple answer is that it converts DC electricity (produced by the panels) to AC so it can be used in the house. I think there are restrictions on what the inverter can do.
