    Good morning all,
I’ve just finished my Pilates session.
I watched some of the D day service this morning but will have to watch the rest on catch up. I watched it last night, too. Very moving. My Dad was in the merchant navy, on convoys at the time, so not directly involved with D Day itself - I think he was in the Med somewhere. They, too, experienced horrors of which he rarely spoke, just tended to speak of the funny times. I know it affected him deeply though as he had frequent nightmares.
We have so much to be thankful for and must never forget.

@Bluejayway, how absolutely super to see that picture of your Dad with his crew mates. I was beginning to wonder how I'd missed it and then realised you had edited your original post  Thank you so much for sharing that with us and great respect to all service men who gave such dedicated duty for their country.

It was totally gobsmacking (terrible word, but appropriate!) @Ladybird4 to find that photo. Also amazing to discover his nickname was Champ. Also Uncle Ping (he was an ASDIC operator). He died in 2000 but would have been chuffed to find these pics. Here's another couple, he's on the left in both Screenshot 2024-06-06 at 10-36-08 Ernest Farr - Russian Arctic Convoy Museum.png Screenshot 2024-06-06 at 10-33-48 Ernest Farr - Russian Arctic Convoy Museum.png

@Bluejayway, I did smile at 'Uncle Ping's' appropriate nickname bearing in mind his function. Love those pics!

Harrumph :mute: The tv has started switching itself off again. It’s been suggested that it might be a problem with the Remote … I’ve ordered a replacement for £7:99 from that big river … should arrive tomorrow. If that doesn’t solve it we’ll have to get a new tv. It’ll soon be Wimbledon :gaah:

Evening all, feels like I've been chasing my tail all day! Woke up at 6 ish for usual loo visit, then slept through to nearly 9 am! Think all the gardening work is beginning to catch up with me so tried it to take it easier today. That said, I dashed to the local primary school at 3.30pm to give them a scarecrow we'd found in the shed. They'd had a vegetable garden for the kids when I was maintaining the small memorial garden there but don't do veg any more which is a shame. Chatted to the Grounds Manager, who I knew, who very proudly showed me some wild Bee Orchids in a sunny bank which they don't mow any more. I was dead envious!

My sister phoned to tell me her partner had collapsed at work who had phoned her to come and take him to the local A&E at Burton Upon Trent - apparently there was a 6 hour wait for an ambulance so the paramedics followed her to the hospital in case he had a heart attack on the way! Not even triaged for 3 1/2 hours and they didn't seem all that busy. Another 2hr wait. She wasn't allowed to accompany him to see the doctor, who diagnosed angina and prescribed the meds - which they hadn't even got in stock. Honestly, you couldn't make it up. The doc sent the meds note to the pharmacy (supposed to be 24 hr but wasn't) so they had to go back this morning to pick it up. They'd got home at 5 am. Heaven help you if that's your local hospital.

                Evening folks.

@Dovefromabove - worth checking the tv doesn’t have a ‘power saving’ mode to turn off after a set time? They usually give a ‘warning’ prior though.

I’ve spent most of the day pottering about in garden. Made big progress on the ivy-cull under the big Acer.

Just had some new potatoes for tea (not mine, but they were Welsh) - yum.

Edit: missed you there @lizzie27 - sorry to hear about that hospital performance. Waits are awful in most EDs but waiting for triage should be slicker than that! Hope all ok with him anyway.

Yes, thanks @AuntyRach, I was just going to add he is ok but the cooker timer went off!
He wanted to go into work today but my sister has put her foot down and hopes he won't go in tomorrow. He's been doing 14 hour shifts lately to help pay the bills.
We count ourselves lucky here, the RUH is usually pretty good.

It's turned out to be a beautiful evening here, with the sunshine shining on the wood opposite.
I'm meeting a good friend tomorrow for coffee and cake in her garden so hope it stays dry.

Due to go to our local D-Day lighting of the beacon at 9:15pm. It should be well attended.

Goodness me, @lizzie27, what a trial for your BiL and sister. I hope he is going to be alright. Tell him not to be in a rush to go back to work tomorrow - he needs to listen to his body. I know bills have to be paid, but he can’t maintain 14 + hour shifts indefinitely.
