They live in a perspex shelter from December until April. Some stay in there all year round. The shelter is sheltered -i.e. in between two garages.

You can see why they call Nigella 'Love in a Mist' and is excellent in flower arranging.

It can become quite invasive but easy to get out

I am a big fan of Nigella. I even have photos of it on my walls! :blue thumb: I think it is underrated as people don't come across it in flower at GCs because it doesn't like to be transplanted.

                    Yellow.

Phlomis (Jerusalem Sage) is extremely popular with bees and they seem to rush to them from noon onwards.

Phlomis fruiticosa grows as a shrub (taken as the sun was rising so the bees aren't flocking yet)

                    Phlomis russeliana - a perennial

We have it in large clumps all round the garden and it spreads very easily. We are always digging up lots of it and we fill the car boot with boxes of them and take them to a charity garden centre.

Cistus battandieri (Pineapple tree) likes it if it has plenty of space to grow but can be pruned to remain more manageable

@ViewAhead how hardy is that gorgeous blue salvia please? I don't do well with salvias, but it definitely looks worth trying

Phlomis is looking good and bee popular here as well. Very jealous of all your Nigella @shiney . One if my favourite annuals, I love the Flower and the seedheads but unfortunately it’s not very keen on our garden and if it does grace us with a few flowers it rarely self-seeds

I've managed to keep it through 3 winters so far, but I am very far south. I grow it in a pot to better ward off the munchers, so if the forecast is for below zero, I can just pop it in the garage overnight. (As it has no winter top-growth, presumably it could stay in there as long as necessary.) I believe it is supposed to be OK down to about -2. I take the precaution of collecting seeds from it each autumn ... just in case! :) Definitely worth a go, I'd say.

@shiney, does the Cistus smell of pineapple?

@Butterfly6 Nigella seed like weeds all over our garden. Mrs Shiney collects the seeds and gives them away to members of her gardening clubs and flower arranging clubs. We have a lot more around the garden and they are all self seeded. :noidea:

Mrs Shiney's answer to all the questions she receives about how well the plants do in our garden is that you must talk to them nicely.

@ViewAhead that's a debateable question :heehee:. It has a gentle smell that some people say is reminiscent of pineapple but that may be influenced by the nickname and the look of the flowers.
